Sunday March 23, 2014Gators Begin NCAA Tournament Against Dayton on Sunday

University Park, PA

Head Coach Amanda Butler has led the Gators into the postseason each of her seven years.

Florida returns to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012 and makes its 14th overall “Big Dance” appearance in program history.

The No. 11-seeded Gators (19-12) play No. 6-seeded Dayton (23-7, 14-2 Atlantic 10) in the first round at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center on Sunday, March 23 at 3 p.m. ET.

Florida vs. Dayton - at a Glance

·         This is the second meeting between Florida and Dayton - the first also coming in the postseason and was a 97-93 Gator victory in Dayton, Ohio.

·         The Gators and Flyers only prior meeting was on March 15, 2000, in the first round of the 32-team Postseason WNIT.

·         Tonya Washington’s 39-point effort against Dayton in the first round of the 2000 WNIT is UF’s all-time record for most points scored in a postseason game.

Florida in the NCAA Tournament

·         The Gators are 11-13 all-time in NCAA action, including 2-2 under UF Head Coach Amanda Butler

·         UF holds an 8-5 record in first round games

·         The Gators are 0-1 all-time as the No. 11 seed (1999: lost to Arizona, 87-84 in overtime)

Every Year Under Butler

·         Florida’s inclusion in the 2014 NCAA field is the program’s seventh consecutive postseason appearance - every year under head coach Amanda Butler.

·         She is the only one of the eight Gator head coaches who has done so.

·         In fact, Butler is the only Gator head coach to earn a postseason berth in her first year with the program.

Good When We Get There

·         In all six previous trips to the postseason under coach Amanda Butler, the Gators have won at least their first round game.

·         Last season Florida won a program-record four postseason games en route to the WNIT semifinals.

Lean on Postseason Experience

·         While Florida has made six previous trips to the postseason, the current group of Gators was a bit lean on postseason experience of any kind entering 2014.

·         Only Jaterra Bonds and Lily Svete have played in an NCAA game … and only those two plus Kayla Lewis, January Miller and Carlie Needles have played in any postseason game.

Thrillers!

·         17 of UF’s games have been decided by 10 points or less (10-7 record in those games).

·         10 of the Gator’s 16 SEC games were decided by 10 points or less (6-4 in those games).

Gator Watch

·         Three eligible Gators average a double-figure scoring effort: Jaterra Bonds (15.6 ppg), Kayla Lewis (11.9 ppg) and Cassie Peoples (10.2 ppg), with January Miller adding 9.3 points per game.

·         Kayla Lewis has been the top Gator on the boards, pulling down 8.6 per game, followed by Ronni Williams’ 5.5 per game mark.

·         Bonds is dishing 4.3 assists per game, with Peoples handing out 3.6.

·         Four different Gators have recorded at least 40 steals en route to the team’s 9.3 per game average (fourth in SEC), with Peoples collecting 52, Lewis 44 and Bonds 43.

Bonds, Jaterra Bonds

Senior Jaterra Bonds is doing it all in her final collegiate season. She leads the Gators in:

·         Scoring (15.6 ppg),

·         Assists (4.3 apg),

·         Made free throws (163) and

·         Free throw attempts (198),

·         While hitting 44.9 percent of her shots from the floor, 82.3 percent from the free throw line and collecting 1.4 steals.

Gator Bytes vs. Dayton

·         Florida Head Coach Amanda Butler and Dayton Head Coach Jim Jabir squared off a couple times against each other in the Atlantic 10 Conference when Butler was the head coach at Charlotte for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons before returning to her alma mater.

·         Butler is 2-0 all-time coaching against Dayton; this will be her first time versus the Flyers with the Gators.

·         UF’s all-time postseason scoring single-game record came in the only prior game against Dayton: Tonya Washington scored 39 points in the 2000 WNIT first-round 97-93 win.

·         Dayton won the Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season title for the second consecutive year.

·         Dayton’s Andrea Hoover was named the 2014 A-10 Player of the Year
