Team Notes

Florida (13-7/2-1 SEC) claimed three of four outings last week by defeating Illinois State, 13-5, on Wednesday night before taking two of three games from Western Division rival Arkansas on the opening weekend of SEC play…The Gators captured the first two games by scores of 2-1 and 1-0 before the Hogs avoided the sweep with a 9-3 victory on Sunday…Junior transfer Braden Mattson (.328, 13 RBI) led the Orange and Blue with a .500 (5-for-10) batting average in his league debut, while freshman outfielder Buddy Reed (.203) was 3-for-8 (.375) and junior catcher Taylor Gushue (.315, 15 RBI) was 4-for-11 (.364)…Freshman right-hander Logan Shore (1-1, 0.68) picked up his first collegiate win in the series opener by limiting UA to one run over 6.1 innings and  sophomore righty Eric Hanhold (3-1, 1.93) fired five scoreless frames in his first start of the season to earn the decision in game two…Arkansas jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning en route to a 9-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at McKethan Stadium…The Gators had been seeking their first sweep of the Hogs since 2001 and UF’s season-high seven-game winning streak was snapped with the defeat…In his first action of the season after missing the first 19 games of the year, sophomore outfielder Harrison Bader went 2-for-4 with a double and extended his hitting streak to 10 games dating back to last season…Freshman RHP Dane Dunning set career highs with 4.1 innings in relief and 5 K (1 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 HBP)…He did not allow a hit over his final 14 batters faced and struck out the side in the fifth inning…Three Gator pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout and freshman Peter Alonso’s (.277) first-inning homer was the difference as UF secured the weekend series with a 1-0 win on Saturday night…Making his first start of the season after 10 relief appearances, Hanhold threw five scoreless innings, giving up just a pair of singles, with two strikeouts and two walks...He was followed to the mound by junior southpaw Bobby Poyner (3-2, 2.21), who retired the first 10 Arkansas hitters that he faced and totaled four strikeouts over his 3.2-inning stint…Junior Ryan Harris (1-0, 0.73) ended the contest with a strikeout with a runner on first base to collect his third save…Shore allowed one run over 6.1 innings and totaled five K and sophomore Aaron Rhodes (1-0, 2.00) registered a career-high six strikeouts and retired all seven Arkansas hitters that he faced in a 2-1 Gator victory on Friday night in the SEC opener for both squads…UF improved to 6-1 (.857) under Kevin O’Sullivan in league openers…The Gators grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening frame against junior left-hander Jalen Beeks (3-2) on an RBI grounder by Alonso…After the Hogs countered with the tying run in the second inning, Florida seized a 2-1 advantage in the third on an RBI grounder by junior Casey Turgeon (.280, 13 RBI)…Freshman John Sternagel had started things off with a base-hit into left field and Reed blooped a double into shallow center field…With one out, Turgeon plated Sternagel with a grounder to shortstop…Rhodes retired all seven batters he faced, striking out a career-high six – including each of his first five batters faced…The righty fanned all three batters in the eighth inning looking…UF used a pair of three-run innings and a seven-run eighth to overpower Illinois State, 13-5, on Wednesday night…The Gators notched season-bests in both runs (13) and hits (12), with eight of nine starters chipping in with at least one hit…Turgeon (1-for-4, career-high-tying four RBI, two runs) clubbed his first career grand slam in the eighth and Mattson (2-for-4) had a two-run shot in the fifth…Florida sent 13 batters to the plate and scored seven runs on six hits and three walks in the eighth...Freshman right-hander Brett Morales (0-1) made his third career start and totaled a career-high five K over a season-high 4.1 innings…The Gators host No. 2 Florida State (17-2/5-1 ACC) on Tuesday night in the first of the three meetings between the Sunshine State rivals before heading to Texas A&M (14-7/1-2 SEC) next weekend…After six innings this season, Florida is 7-0 when leading, 1-7 when trailing and 5-0 when tied.

 

Outstanding Performances

Eric Hanhold, Sophomore Right-Hander, 6-5, 205, Palm Harbor, FL

*Turned in a 0.00 ERA in two appearances last week

*Provided the Gators with five scoreless innings in his first start of the season and earned the win as UF clinched its weekend series against Arkansas on Saturday night

*Allowed just a pair of singles and had two strikeouts and two walks

*Combined with juniors Bobby Poyner (3.2 IP) and Ryan Harris (0.1 IP) on Florida’s 1-0, three-hit shutout

*In 11 appearances this season, Hanhold is 3-1 with a 1.93 ERA

*The righty has registered 16 strikeouts and is holding opponents to a .177 clip

 

Braden Mattson, Junior Right Fielder/Catcher, 6-3, 205, San Antonio, TX

*Led the Gator offense with a .500 (7-for-14) batting average in three wins last week in four outings

*Started SEC play by going 5-for-10 (.500) in Florida’s 2-1 series triumph over Arkansas

*Had a two-run single with the bases full in Sunday’s finale versus the Hogs and was 2-for-3 in the contest

*Went 2-for-4 in the league opener and notched his first stolen base of the season

*Connected on a two-run homer against Illinois State for his first round-tripper at UF and was 2-for-4 with two runs in the win

 

Logan Shore, Freshman Right-Hander, 6-1, 210, Coon Rapids, MN

*Collected first collegiate win in Florida’s 2-1 victory over Arkansas on Friday night that started the SEC schedule

*Scattered seven hits and permitted one run over 6.1 innings, with five strikeouts and a pair of walks

*Allowed just his second earned run of the season in the second inning, snapping his scoreless streak at 9.0 innings

*Over 26.1 innings to begin his career, Shore has permitted two earned runs and boasts a 0.68 ERA

*The righty has 21 strikeouts and issued four walks, with an opponent batting average of .213
