Sunday March 16, 2014Top-Ranked Gators Fall to No. 25 LSU, 3-2, to Set Up Rubber Game on Sunday

Baton Rouge, La.

Gator Softball mounted a late comeback Saturday at LSU before falling 3-2.

Gator Softball mounted a late comeback for the second straight night, but fell to No. 25 LSU, 3-2, in the middle game of the teams’ three-game series. No. 1 Florida (27-2, 3-2 SEC) scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning before the rally came up short. Senior Hannah Rogers (Lake Wales, Fla.) allowed three runs on nine hits over six innings, walking one batter and striking out two as she took the loss to fall to 11-2 on the season.

LSU opened the scoring with two runs in the second on an RBI double and a run-scoring fielder’s choice. The Tigers added another run in the fourth on a solo home run that made the score 3-0.

The Orange and Blue cut the deficit to one in the seventh when Chelsea Herndon (Carrollton, Texas) singled to set up a two-run home run by Stephanie Tofft (Lincoln, Calif.), but UF was not able to complete a late comeback for the second consecutive game.

·         Tofft recorded two RBI, marking her 10th multi-RBI game of the season to take the team lead.

·         Kelsey Stewart (Wichita, Kan.) singled in the fifth to extend her reached-base streak to 29 consecutive games to begin the season.

·         The base hit also ran Stewart’s hitting streak to 12 games, tying Lauren Haeger (Peoria, Ariz.) for the longest on the team in 2014.

Head Coach Tim Walton

On what the Gators need to do to be able to produce runs early in the game:

“The bottom line is you have to get hits with runners in scoring position.”

On what the team needs to do to win the series on Sunday:

“Same thing—we’ve just got to get on base and give [ourselves] as many opportunities to score as possible. We’ve just got to get a clutch hit.”

On how the offense can provide better run support for its pitchers:

“We’ve got to pitch better. We’ve got to hit better. We’ve got to be more aggressive. We’ve got to execute and be productive. That’s the key; our outs have to be more productive than they are. But I think in all phases—we’ve got to pitch better, we’ve got to hit better, we’ve got to play better and we’ve got to be more clutch.”
