Team Notes

Florida (10-6) enjoyed a perfect 4-0 week by defeating Southern Miss, 4-2, in Pensacola on Tuesday night before sweeping a three-game series from UConn in which every contest went to extra innings…The Gators edged the Huskies, 1-0 (11 innings), on Friday, 2-1 (10 innings), on Saturday and 6-5 (10 innings) on Sunday…UF’s four-game winning streak is its longest of the season…The Gators’ pitching staff compiled a 1.45 ERA over the set with UConn, surrendering five earned runs in 31 innings, to go along with 27 strikeouts….Junior second baseman Casey Turgeon (.300, 8 RBI) delivered walk-off singles both Friday in the 11th inning and Sunday in the 10th inning to down the Huskies…He batted a team-best .545 (6-for-11) and drew a team-leading five walks over the three games against UConn…Junior third baseman Josh Tobias (.250) was 5-for-11 (.455) over the weekend, highlighted by a leadoff triple in the 10th inning of the finale, and he scored the game-winning run… Junior left-hander Bobby Poyner (3-2, 2.76) picked up wins in relief during the final two games…UF’s bullpen registered a 1.10 ERA versus the Huskies, giving up two runs in 16.1 innings, with 13 K…Turgeon delivered a squeeze bunt single to drive in Tobias with the decisive run in the 10th inning as Florida won on Sunday, 6-5…. Junior catcher Taylor Gushue (.293, 13 RBI) (2-for-3, three RBI) had tied the contest at 5-5 with a one-out, solo homer in the ninth…He has both of the Gators’ homers this season…After UConn loaded the bases in the 10th against sophomore righty Eric Hanhold (2-1, 2.70) with one down, Poyner had a strikeout and a fly out to keep the game tied…The Gators posted their first sweep of a weekend series since taking three meetings from South Carolina from April 11-13, 2013 (3-2, 4-3, 14-5)…Florida collected its fifth come-from-behind victory of the season and second of the series…Junior Zack Powers was hit by pitch with the bases loaded and none out in the 10th inning to bring home freshman Buddy Reed with the winning run as UF earned a 2-1 decision on Saturday…Reed (2-for-4, two runs) led off with a single up the middle and moved into scoring position with his first career stolen base…After sophomore shortstop Richie Martin (2-for-5) beat out a bunt single for runners on the corners, Turgeon  was walked intentionally to fill the bags…Powers was plunked with the first pitch to end the contest….Poyner retired all three batters he faced to earn the victory, while seven Gator pitchers combined for a season-high 16 strikeouts…Freshman LHP A.J. Puk (1-1, 3.75) made his second start and struck out seven batters in 4.1 innings, both career highs…The seven K matched a season-high for a Gator starting pitcher (Logan Shore vs. FGCU on Feb. 27)…Turgeon roped a game-winning, two-out single in the 11th inning to score Tobias from second base with the game’s lone run as Florida nipped UConn, 1-0, on Friday… In the 11th, Tobias (3-for-4) led off with a single up the middle…Reed laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Tobias into scoring position… After Martin (.338, 14 runs) lined out to second base, ending his hitting streak at a career-high 17 games, Turgeon (2-for-3, two walks) smacked a 2-0 offering into right field that brought home Tobias with the winning run…Shore (0-1, 0.45) hurled a career-high seven scoreless innings and allowed only a pair of singles, with four strikeouts and a walk...Over 20 innings to begin his career, he has permitted one earned run…The Gators will host Illinois State (8-4/MVC) on Wednesday night before starting SEC play next weekend in Gainesville against No. 24t. Arkansas (8-4).

 

Outstanding Performances

Casey Turgeon, Junior Second Baseman, 5-9, 165, Palm Harbor, FL

 

*Led the Gator offense with a .467 (7-for-15) batting average in four wins last week over Southern Miss and a sweep of UConn

*Delivered walk-off singles both Friday in the 11th inning and Sunday in the 10th inning to down the Huskies

*Batted a team-best .545 (6-for-11) and drew a team-leading five walks over the three games against UConn

*Trailing Southern Miss, 2-0, in the sixth inning last Tuesday, Turgeon led off with a double and scored to cut the Gators’ deficit in half

*With the game versus USM tied in the seventh, 2-2, Turgeon laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance sophomore Richie Martin for what turned out to be the winning run

*Delivered a game-winning, two-out single in the 11th inning to score junior Josh Tobias with the game’s lone run as UF nipped UConn, 1-0, in the series opener

*Went 1-for-3 and was walked intentionally in the 10th inning on Saturday to load the bases, setting the stage for junior Zack Powers to be hit by a pitch to end the game

*Come through with a squeeze bunt single to drive in Tobias with the decisive run in the 10th inning as the Gators finished the sweep on Sunday

*Tied season high with three hits in the finale and had put the Gators on the board with an RBI double in the first inning

 

Logan Shore, Freshman Right-Hander, 6-1, 210, Coon Rapids, MN

 

*Hurled a career-high seven scoreless innings and allowed only a pair of singles in the series opener against UConn

*Totaled four strikeouts and a walk while facing 25 batters but did not receive a decision as the Gators posted a 1-0 victory in 11 innings

*Held the Huskies’ hitters to a .091 (2-for-22) batting average in the contest

*Over 20 innings to begin his career, Shore has permitted one earned run and boasts a 0.45 ERA

*The righty has 16 strikeouts and issued two walks, with an opponent batting average of .188
