No. 1 Florida opens SEC play this weekend against visiting Ole Miss.

GAME NOTES

 

The No. 1 Gator Softball team will open Southeastern Conference play this weekend (March 7-9) when Florida hosts Ole Miss at Katie Seashole Pressly Softball Stadium. Friday’s opener is set for 6 p.m., with Saturday’s contest scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday’s 11 a.m. finale will be broadcast live on SUN Sports with Larry Vettel and former Gator All-American Megan Bush on the call. All games can be heard on WGGG (1230 AM), with Bush joining Mike Gillespie for Friday and Saturday’s games and Gillespie calling Sunday’s contest. In addition, fans can follow the action through Gametracker, which is available on the GatorZone.com schedule page.

 

Gator Bites—Quick Notables

Florida is 22-0 and ranked No. 1 in both national polls…The Gators’ 22-game win streak to begin the 2014 campaign is the second-longest season-opening run in program history (24 games, 2011); a weekend sweep of the Rebels would set a record for the Orange and Blue…UF won the SEC regular-season and tournament championships last year, and this weekend marks the beginning of their conference title defense…Senior Hannah Rogers (Lake Wales, Fla.) was announced on Feb. 20 as one of 30 softball finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award, which will be presented at the Women’s College World Series.

 

Looking Back: Boston College & Diamond 9 Citrus Classic

UF defeated Boston College 7-3 on Tuesday, winning its second game in three days against an ACC opponent after beating Maryland Sunday at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic…The Gators went 5-0 at the Orlando tournament, with wins over No. 4/6 Oregon, Fordham, Ohio State, Maryland and Radford…Friday’s win over the Ducks marked UF’s second extra-inning win of the season, and its second victory over a Top-5 opponent. (Both feats were first accomplished Feb. 8 in Florida’s 9-4 [8 innings] win over No. 4/5 Michigan.)…The Gators outscored their five Orlando opponents by a combined margin of 43-4.

 

Haeger Wins Third SEC Honor in Four Weeks

Junior Lauren Haeger (Peoria, Ariz.) was named SEC Player of the Week on Monday after she hit .412 (7x17) with four home runs, 11 RBI, seven runs scored, and a 1.118 slugging percentage in Florida’s five wins at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic. The award marks Haeger’s third SEC weekly award of the season; she was named Pitcher of the Week for Week 1 and Player of the Week for Week 2.

 

Up Next

Following the weekend series against Ole Miss, the Gators will finish a stretch of 16 consecutive games in Florida when they host Mercer in a doubleheader on Wednesday (March 12) at 4 p.m.
