Tuesday March 4, 2014No. 1 Gators Defeat Boston College, 7-3, to Extend Season-Opening Win Streak to 22 Games

Gainesville, Fla.

Hannah Rogers earned her ninth win of the season in Florida's 7-3 victory over Boston College.

The top-ranked Gator Softball team extended its season-opening winning streak to 22 games Tuesday night with a 7-3 win over Boston College at Katie Seashole Pressly Softball Stadium. The Gators overcame a 2-0 fourth-inning deficit with seven straight runs, allowing just one unearned run to the Eagles in the final inning.

Senior Hannah Rogers (Lake Wales, Fla.) improved to 9-0 on the year after she allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings, walking three batters and striking out five. Junior Lauren Haeger (Peoria, Ariz.) worked the last two frames, allowing an unearned run with two walks and a strikeout.

Boston College opened the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the first, and added another run in the fourth on an RBI base hit. The Gators knotted the game at 2 in the bottom of the frame, scoring a pair of runs on an RBI double by Stephanie Tofft (Lincoln, Calif.) and a run-scoring single from Taylor Schwarz (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.).

UF’s momentum continued into the fifth, when Bailey Castro (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) plated Kelsey Stewart (Wichita, Kan.) and Justine McLean (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) on a two-run single. The Orange and Blue added three more insurance runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Kirsti Merritt (Lake Panasoffkee, Fla.) and an RBI single from Tofft.

A defensive miscue in the final inning led to a run for the Eagles to cut the Florida lead to 7-3, but BC got no closer against Haeger, who sealed the Gators’ 22nd consecutive win to begin the 2014 campaign.

·         The 22-game win streak extends the second-longest season-opening run in program history (24, 2011).

·         Tofft (2x4) extended her hitting streak to six games, which is the second-longest active streak on the team (Haeger, 8).

·         Tofft recorded 2 RBI for her ninth multi-RBI game of the season, breaking a tie with Haeger for the team lead.

·         Stewart had two hits against the Eagles, and has reached base in all 22 games this year.

On the Gators producing seven runs after going scoreless for the first three innings:

“We did a pretty good job. We had our opportunities a couple times early in the game, and we didn’t take advantage. I thought for the most part, when the situations came about, we started to go with the pitch a little bit better. We hit the ball well to the opposite field, and then got a good hit out of Stephanie Tofft in the fourth inning. It showed some good character, coming [back] from a 2-0 deficit in the fourth inning.”

On the offensive production despite BC issuing four walks to Haeger:

“The good part about that is, it’s four baserunners who have an opportunity to score. That’s huge for us when we have that situation like it was. It just turns the lineup over.”

On what the Gators need to do this weekend when SEC play begins:

“I think our team needs to continue doing the same thing—continue to make our improvements and work hard. [We need to] continue to bat, pitch and build that chemistry and confidence, [to] make all the routine plays and make the special plays along the way. That’s what we practice every day.”
