Monday March 3, 2014No. 5 Gators Wrap Up Two-Game Road Trip at No. 12 Loyola
The No. 5 Gators won their first road contest of the season with a 14-1 victory over No. 13/15 Stony Brook and look to pick up another as they face to No. 12 Loyola on Tuesday, March 4 at 1 p.m. This will be the second meeting between the teams and the first in Baltimore, as Florida owns a 1-0 advantage over Loyola.
Gators Sit at No. 5 in Polls
The University of Florida lacrosse team moved up two spots to No. 5 in the IWLCA Poll after defeating No. 13/15 Stony Brook, 14-1. The Gators stayed No. 5 in the Brine Media Poll for the third straight week.
Among the teams remaining on Florida’s schedule, there are five teams present in both the Brine Media Poll and IWLCA Poll: No. 3/2 Syracuse, No. 4/4 Northwestern, No. 9/9 Penn State, No. 12/12 Loyola and No. 14/17 Johns Hopkins.
Gilroy Named to Tewaaraton Watch List
Junior midfielder Shannon Gilroy has been named to the 2014 Tewaaraton Award watch list. Gilroy leads the Gators with 28 points, 24 goals and 31 draw controls so far in 2014. Highlighting the young season, Gilroy set or tied three program records in the win over High Point with 10 draw controls and eight goals off of 13 shots. She also currently leads the nation in goals and is second in points. Gilroy was a Tewaaraton nominee in 2013, after finishing the season leading Florida with 52 goals and 59 draw controls and ranking second with 65 points.
Grabher and Burgess Named ALC Players of the Week
Senior defender Krista Grabher and freshman attack Sammi Burgess have been named the American Lacrosse Conference Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively. The honors come after Florida wins over both James Madison and Cincinnati.
Grabher led a Gator defense that only allowed 14 points in two games, while the she recorded two ground balls and a draw control. Grabher held JMU’s Stephanie Finley to just three goals and Cincinnati’s Megan Bell to just two goals. Finley and Bell are both the leading scorers for their teams and Bell was coming off a six-goal game at Stetson. This marks the first time Grabher has grabbed an ALC weekly award.
Burgess earned her second ALC Rookie of the Week honor after she racked up 5 goals and 5 assists while grabbing four ground balls and a draw control as Florida defeated James Madison and Cincinnati this week. Burgess had two goals and two assists against James Madison, then tallied a career-high-tying three goals and a career-high three assists for a career-high six points on Sunday against Cincinnati. Burgess led the Gators this week with a total of 10 points.
Burgess Named to Inside Lacrosse Rookie of the Year Watch List
Sammi Burgess has been named to Inside Lacrosse’s 2014 Rookie of the Year watch list. Burgess is one of nine players on the list and just one of three from the ALC. Burgess currently leads the Gators in assists (8) and ground balls (13), while ranking second in goals (11) and points (19). Nationally, Burgess sits 11th in assists, 12th in points and 15th in goals.
Gilroy, Gators Ranked high in NCAA statistics
The NCAA released its first batch of national statistics this week, with Shannon Gilroy, Sammi Burgess and Florida ranking well in several categories. Gilroy leads the nation in goals (27) and is ranked third in points (37), 13th in draw controls (5.5 per game) and 14th in assists (10), while holding the single-game record for goals with eight, which the junior notched in the 18-7 win over High Point. Senior goalkeeper Cara Canington ranks No. 6 in save percentage (.596) and 18th in saves (34). As a team, Florida ranks third in points (133), 6th in draw controls per game (17) and 7th in scoring offense (16.83 goals per game).
