Florida (6-6) hosted a double round-robin event at McKethan Stadium against FGCU and Illinois over the weekend…The Gators dropped three of four games, splitting with the Eagles (1-2, 4-0) and falling twice to the Fighting Illini (0-6, 1-5)…UF’s offense was led by freshman 1B/3B/DH Peter Alonso, who was 7-for-16 (.438), and sophomore shortstop Richie Martin, who was 6-for-17 (.353)…Martin is on a career-best 16-game hitting streak dating back to last season…He has a team-leading .340 (17-for-50) batting average and paces the Orange and Blue in runs (11), doubles (4) and stolen bases (3)…Alonso is 12-for-37 (..324) in his rookie campaign…Florida’s pitching staff yielded 13 runs (11 earned), with 31 strikeouts, 9 walks and a 2.75 ERA over the four games…Sophomore RHP Eric Hanhold (1-1, 3.18) had six strikeouts and permitted one hit over 3.2 scoreless innings covering two appearances…Junior catcher Taylor Gushue (.304) remains the squad’s leader with 10 RBI…Freshman left-hander A.J. Puk (1-1, 4.70) made his first career start on Sunday versus Illinois, becoming the fourth different freshman hurler to start a game this year…Alonso was a career-best 3-for-4 in UF’s finale, registering his fourth multiple-hit game and raising his hitting streak to five games…Redshirt junior right-hander Karsten Whitson (1-0, 4.50) and sophomore right-hander Aaron Rhodes (0-0, 1.04) combined on a three-hit shutout as the Gators blanked FGCU, 4-0, on Saturday…Whitson allowed only a first-inning single over five innings, his longest outing of the season, to earn his first victory since June 10, 2012, in the Gators’ NCAA Super Regional victory over NC State that clinched a berth in the College World Series…Rhodes registered career-highs in innings pitched (4.0) and strikeouts (4) to collect his first career save as UF posted its second shutout of the campaign (4-0 on Feb. 14 versus Maryland)…A trio of players, Alonso (2-for-4), junior third baseman Josh Tobias (2-for-3) and junior second baseman Casey Turgeon (2-for-4) had multiple-hit efforts as part of a 10-hit offensive attack…In his second career start last Thursday against FGCU, freshman righty Logan Shore (0-1, 0.69) posted Gator season-highs in strikeouts (7) and innings pitched (6.0) but suffered the defeat, as the hosts committed a season-high four errors in a 2-1 setback…The Gators will face Southern Miss (6-6) in Pensacola, Fla., on Tuesday night before welcoming UConn (4-5) to town for a three-game weekend series in Gainesville.
