Friday March 23, 2001Softball Defeats Florida International 5-2

BOCA RATON, Fla.

The Florida Gator softball team scored five runs in the seventh inning to earn a 5-2 comeback victory against instate foe Florida International and extend its winning streak to a season-high-tying six games Friday afternoon at the Florida Atlantic Tournament.

Senior first baseman Ashley Boone (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge) ripped a two-out, three-run double off the center field fence to give UF the go-ahead runs. It was her second double of the game.

"We were so pleased that Ashley stepped up at that moment," Coach Karen Johns said. "That's when you need senior leadership…when you're down to the wire."

Freshman left fielder Mylin Prieto (Cooper City, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) doubled to lead off the inning. Sophomore Bree Berger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) scored Prieto with a single down the left field line after she advanced when catcher Emily Marino (Joliet, Ill./Joliet) walked. UF tied it at two apiece after sophomore second baseman Prissie Walden (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast) drove in Marino with a base hit.

FIU scored first in the fifth frame on two hits, an error and a Renise Landry (West Monroe, La./West Monroe) wild pitch. Landry (12-2) also allowed a solo homer in the sixth. The senior has now won four straight decisions. She closed the book with two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk, and five strikeouts.

UF improved to 23-8 while FIU fell to 25-11. The Gators will face Jacksonville State Friday at 6 p.m.
