Stanford, CA

Coach Thornqvist praised the play of freshman Kourtney Keegan.

Fifth-ranked Florida was blanked by No. 3 Stanford, 7-0, at the Taube Family Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.

The Gators dropped the doubles point for the third time this season and the Cardinal carried that momentum onto the singles courts, where the home team dominated play.

Freshmen Kourtney Keegan and Belinda Woolcock provided the most fight for the Gators, as Keegan fell in a tight second-set tiebreak, 10-8, while Woolcock dropped a third set, 10-point super-tiebreak.

Florida will have a chance to regroup on Friday, Feb. 28, when the Gators play host to No. 10 Texas A&M in both team’s Southeastern Conference opener, with first serve scheduled for 5 p.m.

The battle between the Gators and Aggies also is part of the USTA’s College MatchDay series and will be streamed live online at ESPN3 and fans can view the match on the WatchESPN app.

The College MatchDay Fan Experience will be setup on the Springs Lawn where there will be giveaways, a special appearance by a Gator great, interactive games and more.

The first 350 fans will receive a “It’s Great to be a Florida Gator” tumbler.

A Kids Korner will be set up for poster making and face painting and all will get a chance to meet Alberta, the Gator cheerleads and dazzlers.

UPDATED RECORDS: Florida 8-2 … Stanford 7-0

Quoting UF head coach Roland Thornqvist:

“Stanford really took it to us and all credit goes to them. It was over after 20 minutes of singles. I’m at a loss. Stanford is a great team and they certainly played well enough to earn the win. Our freshmen were the highlight for us today. They played high-level tennis at the five and six spots in the lineup. We have a lot to work on after today’s match and it will make us stronger as a result.”
