Team Notes

Florida (2-1) captured two of three games from Maryland at McKethan Stadium to kick off the 100th season of Gator Baseball…Head coach Kevin O’Sullivan improved to 7-0 in season-opening series in his tenure…On his watch, the Gators have swept Siena (2008), Louisville (2009) and USF (2010 & 2011) and captured two of three from Cal State Fullerton (2012), Duke (2013) and Maryland (2014)…Sophomore shortstop Richie Martin was a team-best .455 (5-for-11) in the series, with four runs, three RBI and a pair of doubles in the finale…Junior catcher Taylor Gushue drove in a team-high five RBI and was 4-for-11 (.364)…Junior righty Ryan Harris had two appearances in which he did not allow any hits or runs…UF used a total of 10 newcomers over the three games, including three freshmen starters on Opening Night, Peter Alonso (DH), Ryan Larson (LF) and Buddy Reed (CF), as well as four freshmen pitchers: RHP Dane Dunning, RHP Brett Morales, LHP A.J. Puk and LHP Kirby Snead…The Gators overcame a 3-0 deficit with a four-run second and a three-run fifth en route to an 8-5 win to claim the rubber game of the teams’ series on Sunday...The contest was shortened to eight innings due to the Terps’ travel schedule…Gushue (1-for-3) snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run single and also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly…Sophomore right-hander Eric Hanhold (1-0) notched his first career triumph by tossing three scoreless innings, while Harris collected his first career save by having UMD senior Blake Schmit (2-for-5) ground out to end the game with a pair of runners aboard…The Gators drew a season-high nine walks and played error-free for the second time in three games…Redshirt junior right-hander Karsten Whitson made his first start since May 26, 2012, and allowed four hits and three runs, with two strikeouts and two walks, over two innings…UMD freshman right-hander Mike Shawaryn carried a shutout into the sixth inning in his collegiate debut and the Terps held off Florida, 9-7, to even the series on Saturday...Trailing 6-0 in the sixth, the Gators closed to within 8-7 with a three-run eighth-inning outburst…Florida scored seven runs on seven hits and used aggressive base-running to add runs on a pair of wild pitches…Gushue led the Orange and Blue with a pair of base hits; he led off the third with a double and dropped a single between left and center in the sixth….Martin kept up the two-out eighth-inning rally and narrowed the gap to a run with a run-scoring single to right…Reed also chipped in with a two-run single to left field in the eighth…Morales took the loss in his debut after surrendering five hits and five runs over 3.1 innings…Junior left-hander Bobby Poyner (5.1 IP), Harris (1.2 IP) and sophomore left-hander Danny Young (2.0 IP) combined on a three-hitter as the Gators topped Maryland, 4-0, on Friday in the season opener for both squads…Poyner (1-0) established a career high with five strikeouts and Young collected his first career save as the Orange and Blue notched its first shutout in a season opener since 2006 (10-0 over Cincinnati)….Held in check through the first two innings by UMD senior right-hander Jake Stinnett (0-1), the Gators plated three runs on three hits in the third inning to seize a 3-0 advantage…Alonso (1-for-2) singled up the middle in his first career at bat and Reed drew a one-out walk before Martin (2-for-4, two runs) singled through the left side to load the bases…A fielder’s choice by Larson (1-for-4) brought home Alonso with the initial run when the Terps’ catcher was unable to hold on to the relay throw and Reed was also able to score on the play on heads-up base-running…Gushue (1-for-3, two RBI) increased UF’s margin to three runs with a single into shallow center field to bring across Martin…The Gators tacked on another run in the eighth on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Gushue that scored Martin...Martin had led off with a base-hit through the left side and Larson and junior Casey Turgeon followed with consecutive singles to fill the bags…Gushue sent an offering to the warning track in left field that finalized the 4-0 margin…The Gators will play five games in the upcoming week, hosting UCF (3-0) on Tuesday and North Florida (2-1) on Wednesday before traveling to No. 17 Miami (FL) (2-1) for a three-game series in Coral Gables starting on Friday night.
