Sunday February 16, 2014No. 12 Florida Drops Final Match of 2014 ITA Team Indoors to No. 16 Notre Dame

Houston, Texas

No. 16 Notre Dame blanked the No. 12 Florida men’s tennis team 4-0 this afternoon as the Gators finished up their trip to the 2014 ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championship with a 1-2 record.

Gordon Watson and Maxx Lipman played competitively at No. 2 doubles against the No. 46 duo of Josh Hagar and Billy Pecor, but were unable to finish the match as The Fighting Irish took the lead early with the doubles point at Nos. 3 and 1.

Florida then lost at Nos. 1 and 2 singles and was down 3-0 to Notre Dame. Seniors Florent Diep and Michael Alford, and freshman Lipman were all fighting to keep their team alive in singles play, but Notre Dame’s No. 121 Ryan Bandy won a tiebreak over Watson at No. 3 singles and the Fighting Irish took home the win.

The ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championship game takes place tomorrow as No. 5 Ohio State faces the winner of No. 2 UCLA vs. No. 3 USC. For more information on the tournament, click here.

Head Coach Bryan Shelton Says: “Notre Dame played very well today. Our team did not respond when the bell went off. We have to do a better job than we did today. Our focus is to get home and to use the next 10 days to get better. It was a good experience to play this tournament indoors and our guys understand better what it takes to reach the top. We aren’t there yet, but we’ll get there.”
