Gainesville, FL

Ashley Boone had two doubles vs. Maine.

The Gator softball team's double header sweep of Maine was twice as nice as Florida set yet another record to defeat the Black Bears 4-1 and 7-0 and extend its win streak to five games Tuesday evening at the UF Softball Stadium.

Five players combined for eight doubles on the night. In the opener, senior first baseman Ashley Boone (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge) led UF's school-record five doubles charge with a personal-best-tying two. The Gators (22-8) also tied the mark for doubles in an inning with three in the first game. They just set that record less than 48 hours prior in a 5-4 win at Kentucky.

UF totaled five hits to score three times in the notable third inning. Boone hit her second double and scored on Emily Marino's (Joliet, Ill./Joliet) two-bagger in the fifth. A UF error in the seventh allowed Maine's (4-16) only run on the night.

Sophomore Nikki Michael (Phoenix, Ariz./Greenway) pitched a three-hit complete game. Michael (4-2) struck out five. Carrie Green (1-4) took the loss. Green earned all four runs on eight hits.

Coach Karen Johns thought the first game was a good starting point and helped her team make the adjustments to record its seventh shutout. "I felt we gave a better effort in the second game," Johns said. "We had some timely hits. Renise (Landry) did a nice job, but we still gave them too many free passes."

Senior Renise Landry (West Monroe, La../West Monroe) fanned a season-high-tying nine batters in a complete game, one-hit shutout. Landry (11-2) also walked four.

UF got the majority of its production from the bottom of the lineup. Second baseman Prissie Walden (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast) and center fielder Jenilee Garner (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) led UF's nine-hit effort. Each went 2-for-3 with an RBI, batting seventh and eighth, respectively. Walden scored twice.

The Gators got two runs in the second and third frames then closed the book with three in the sixth. The Gators loaded the bases with a pair of singles from Walden and Garner, and a fielder's choice by shortstop Jackie Marchetta (Boyton Beach, Fla./Florida Southern). Boone grounded out for an RBI and Marino sent in the other two with a standup double.

Maine's Candace Jaegge struck out two, walked three and earned four of seven runs over six innings.
