Sunday February 9, 2014Gators Earn Impressive Win vs. No. 6 Southern California at ITA National Team Indoors

Charlottesville, VA

Brianna Morgan played at the No. 2 singles position for the first time in her career.

The second-ranked Gators bounced back from Saturday’s disappointing loss with an impressive 4-1 win against no. 6 Southern California at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by Virginia at the Boar’s Head Sports Club on Sunday.

Florida lost to No. 16 Northwestern, 4-2, yesterday in the quarterfinal round of the national 16-team event.

The Gators dropped the doubles point for the second consecutive match, however, this time recovered with powerful play on the singles court.

Freshman Kourtney Keegan (Roswell, Ga.) provided the first singles decision of the match and tied the scoring at 1-all.

Sophomore Brianna Morgan (Beverly Hills, Calif.) played at a career-high No. 2 spot in the lineup and was next off the court with an impressive 6-1, 6-3 victory against Brynn Boren.

Senior Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.) followed with a thrilling 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 decision against No. 13 Sabrina Santamaria, before senior Alexandra Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) provided the clinching victory, a 7-5, 6-1 win over  Zoe Scandalis.

Quoting UF Head Coach Roland Thornqvist

“After yesterday’s match, we talked last night and challenged our team to be more resilient and courageous in their play. We responded well in doubles but we lost a really close doubles point after being in the lead. It was one of those moments where the team could have just folded up and given up, but I have to say this is a top-10 moment for this team to battle back and win four straight singles matches in the way we did it against one of the best teams in the country. It shows what kind of character we have on this year’s team. I told them that this was about as proud as I’ve been of any team. To be able to make this turnaround, take ownership of yesterday by responding to adversity today, it makes a coach really, really proud.”

“Winning this match in the way we did made coming to this tournament a huge success. It could have been a devastating event for us. This team managed to turn this trip into a huge success and I’m hoping it will pay huge dividends down the stretch.”

“Playing one (singles position) unsettled Olivia (Janowicz) a little bit at first. In the last week to 10 days she has really embraced the fact that she plays up there in the lineup. Although she knew that she was good enough, she needed validation through wins. Once she go the win at Baylor and the win on Saturday, it’s like she can relax and play and she doesn’t have to prove to anybody that she deserves to play there.”
