Saturday February 8, 2014W-Tennis Falls to Northwestern in ITA National Team Indoors Quarterfinals

Charlottesville, VA

Olivia Janowicz won her team-leading 23rd singles match this season.

The second-ranked and top-seeded Gators were upset, 4-2, by No. 16 Northwestern in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by Virginia at the Boar’s Head Sports Club on Saturday.

Florida continues tournament action against No. 6 Southern California on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET.

The Gators lost the doubles point for the first time this year after the Wildcats earned wins on courts three and two.

Northwestern then earned a win on court four, before senior Olivia Janowicz put the Gators on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the number one position.

Freshman Belinda Woolcock evened the dual match at 2-all by earning a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win on court six, however, Northwestern closed out decisions on courts five and two in straight sets to secure the outcome and hand the Gators their first loss of the season.

Quoting UF Head Coach Roland Thornqvist

“Northwestern was better than us in everything today. They were more aggressive in doubles. We were on our heels today at some crucial moments. They really took it to us in singles, as well. It’s a great learning point for us. We have another tough match on Sunday so we’re going to analyze this the best we can and learn from it. We’ll find out what kind of character we have when we battle up against another top opponent in Southern California tomorrow.”
