Quotes from the Court

UF head coach Roland Thornqvist on the National Team Indoor Championships

“It’s nice to have our own indoor facility. It’s actually 80-degrees here right now (Tuesday) and we’re getting ready to practice indoors. In past years, the Florida style of play has been more conducive to outdoor play. This year’s team is a little different. We hit the ball a little flatter and with a little more pop which translates to better play indoors on quicker surfaces. I actually told the team after playing at Baylor (Feb. 1 indoors) that I felt really good about this team playing indoors. Some years, I’ve had some butterflies in my stomach when we had to move in to play, but this team is different. They like hitting the ball. They like playing shorter points. Perhaps, this year we have to make a bigger transition when the weather becomes more humid. As of right now, we’re excited to head up to Virginia. The field is tough but if we play well, we’ll have a chance.”

Thornqvist on senior Alexandra Cercone, who recently won her 100th career singles match

“Alex has played either the No. 1 or No. 2 spot this year for the first time in her career and she has really embraced that role. She’s worked very, very hard in her approach and any time you reach the 100-win platform it’s remarkable. She’s been remarkably consistent throughout her four years here. She has provided great leadership up front along with Olivia (Janowicz) so that all our first-years have to do is look at those two and Sofie (Oyen) and follow along. Alex with 100 wins, we’re really very proud.”
