Monday February 3, 2014Ronni Williams Named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.

Ronni Williams was recognized for the second time this season.

Florida’s Ronni Williams (Daytona Beach, Fla.) was named the Southeastern Conference Co-Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

This is the second time this year the talented Gator rookie has been honored with the conference’s weekly award, also being recognized for her play during the first week of the season.

A quick summary of Williams’ week:

·         Williams started both games last week and averaged 11.0 points and 5.0 rebounds with 3.0 assists while shooting 56.3 percent from the floor.

·         Despite big foul trouble early (3 fouls in the five minutes at Ole Miss), Williams finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and a career-high five assists in just 14 minutes of action. The rookie scored six of her points during the game-breaking 17-1 run in the second half.

·         Led the Gators to their fifth and then sixth SEC wins of the season, already equaling last year’s win total

Also honored on Monday was junior Kayla Lewis (Decatur, Ga.), who was named the Madness SEC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week by College Sports Madness (www.collegesportsmadness.com).

A quick summary of Lewis’ week:

·         Kayla Lewis averaged 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds while shooting a remarkable 73.7 percent from the floor in two wins last week.

·         Scored 5.8 more points than her season average and collected nearly a rebound more.

·         Lewis started the 50th game of her career in the outing versus Ole Miss

·         Kayla Lewis tallied her sixth consecutive double-figure scoring game, the longest active streak on the team

·         Lewis scored the 600th points of her career during her 19-point effort against Ole Miss

·         In the road win, Lewis recorded 19 points on 9-12 field goals and 12 rebounds with three steals, as the Gator junior posted her fifth double-double of the season and eighth of her career

UF head coach Amanda Butler on Ronni Williams:

“She got the first one (SEC Freshman of the Week honor) of the year and at that point it was just a great way to set the tone and expectations for Ronni. She’s kept those expectations very, very high - through a season of ups and downs and a lot of different challenges for her and a lot of different roles she’s played and willingly accepted. I think it’s great recognition and if Ronni was up here (at the press conference podium) with me, I think she’d say, ‘that’s fantastic and I’m just happy that we won.’”

The Gators (16-6, 6-3 SEC) return to action on Thursday, when the team travels to Fayetteville, Ark., to play Arkansas at Bud Walton Arena beginning at 8 p.m. ET (7 p.m. CT).
