Katy Berger and her little sister Bree each went 2-for-4 vs. Kentucky.

It was a family affair as sisters led the Florida Gator softball team to its fourth sweep of defending Southeastern Conference Eastern Division Champ Kentucky in five years Sunday afternoon at the UK Softball Complex. UF (20-8, 6-3 SEC) took the third game of the series 5-4, and secured its fifth straight 20-win season. The Gators now lead the all-time series 17-3.

Sophomore Bree Berger and her sister Katy Berger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), a junior, each went 2-for-4 with a double. Bree had two RBI. The senior class also contributed to UF's 12 hits, marking the third straight game the Gators scattered 10 or more hits. First baseman Ashley Boone (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge) went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. It was the second consecutive game Boone tied her personal best hits mark. Catcher Emily Marino (Joliet, Ill./Joliet) was 2-for-4 with two RBI. UK (14-16, 1-4 SEC) managed seven hits.

"We were very pleased with our at-bats, especially with the top half of our lineup," Coach Karen Johns said. "We need, though, to get better six through nine. If we could've been a little bit better there, it might not have been so close after they came back in that last inning." UF's first five batted .500, but the remainder reached safely twice.

Boone led off the game with a base hit, and designated player Bree Berger sent her home with a single. It was Bree Berger again in the third. Left fielder Mylin Prieto (Cooper City, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas stroked a two-out double, and Berger sent her home with a two-bagger of her own. Right fielder Katy Berger followed with the third consecutive double, setting a UF record for doubles in an inning. The relay beat Bree Berger home, though.

A two-out rally in the sixth gave UF a 5-0 lead. Boone doubled for two RBI, and Marino singled, sending Boone across the plate.

But in the seventh, the Wildcats scored three runs on three hits, including two doubles off of senior pitcher Renise Landry (West Monroe, La./West Monroe). Sophomore Nikki Michael (Phoenix, Ariz./Greenway) came in relief and earned her third save. The fourth run scored on a grounder to short, but it was credited to Landry. Landry (10-2) was responsible for all for runs on seven hits and four walks, and struck out four in six innings. Michael fanned one in one inning.

The Gators return home to play Maine for a non-conference twin bill Tuesday March 20 at noon.
