LEXINGTON, Ky.

Bree Berger set a UF single-game hits record as the Gators won 18-3 vs. Kentucky.

The Florida Gator softball team put on a show like never before in Southeastern Conference play as it defeated defending Eastern Division Champ Kentucky with the largest victory margin UF has ever had in a league game 18-3 and a comeback 5-4, eight inning win Saturday at the UK Softball Complex.

UF (19-8, 5-3 SEC) scored the second-most runs in the five-year program history to claim the series opener in six innings. Eight of nine starters recorded a season-high 16 hits. The Gators also had 10 in the second game. UK (14-15, 1-3 SEC) had five and seven hits, respectively.

"We knew they were going to come at us," Coach Karen Johns said. "But, we prepared hard. They made errors that we were able to capitalize on. We're pleased that we got two wins, but (UK) certainly made it interesting in the second game. Hopefully, we won't have that tomorrow." The teams will play the series finale Sunday at noon.

UF scored twice in its first at-bat, thanks to three of six UK errors. The Wildcats made it a one-run game in the third with two hits, one a bunt single. The Gators scored six runs on five hits and an error as 10 batters came up to the plate in the fifth. In the next inning, they went through the order again plus six more, sending 10 across the plate on eight hits and another error. Freshman left fielder Mylin Prieto (Cooper City, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and sophomore second baseman Prissie Walden (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast) each had a two-bagger, tying a school record for doubles in an inning.

But sophomore Bree Berger's (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) two-run homer to left field highlighted the inning. She singled in her second turn that frame to set the school single-game hits record. Berger was 5-for-5 with four RBI, two runs and her home run.

UK posted two more runs on an error with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman pitcher Amanda Moore (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Hillcrest) closed the book with five hits, three runs (one earned), three walks and six strikeouts over six innings. Moore improved to 7-4.

In the second game, the Wildcats clung to a 1-0 lead from the second through the five frames. UF scored three times, twice by junior Katy Berger's (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) double. Freshman outfielder Jenilee Garner (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) stole home to go ahead 3-1.

The Wildcats came back in their half of the sixth and tied it 3-3 on first baseman Andi Eilerston's two-run dinger. The Gators went down in order, and UK's one hit was unproductive in the seventh as Prieto made a diving catch in left to end the inning and force the extra frame. Senior first baseman Ashely Boone (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge) led off and lined her first opposite field home run in her career, and Walden hit the game-winner, scoring Bree Berger. It was Boone's first homer this year and 11th of her career. The lefty finished 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, tying her personal hits mark.

Senior pitcher Renise Landry (West Monroe, La./West Monroe) hung in after allowing a run in UK's eighth. Landry (9-2) earned all four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out eight over seven and a third frames. Moore came in for two outs in the eighth and walked two and struck out one.
