Junior Taylor Burke cleared 1.83m/6-00.00 in the high jump to open competition at the Rod McCravy Memorial Friday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Jayla Bostic, Taylor Burke and the Gator women’s distance medley relay put on several of UF’s remarkable performances on the opening day of competition at the top-25 saturated Rod McCravy Memorial at Nutter Field House Friday in Lexington. Tabbed USTFCCCA’s Division I National Meet of the Week, the Gators are among an elite contingent of programs competing at the Kentucky-hosted invitational.

UF’s DMR crew on the women’s side, composed of newcomer Rebekah Greene and seniors Ebony Eutsey, Agata Strausa and Cory McGee, cruised to an 11:00.16, the second fastest time in the nation and the second-fastest mark in UF’s indoor record book, while Bostic claimed the women’s weight throw title with a personal best 20.46m/67-1.5. Burke dueled it out in the high jump Friday afternoon, clearing a season-best 1.83m/6-00.00 good for second place, to help open the two-day competition for the Orange and Blue.

Saturday’s Rod McCravy action kicks off at 10 a.m. (ET). Follow the Gators in Lexington with Live Results and Live Video (subscription required).

NOTABLES

·         The Gator women’s DMR clocked an 11:00.16 in its first outing this season, good for second place overall and the second-fastest time in school history in the event as freshman Rebekah Greene made her Gator debut. UF (Greene, Eutsey, Strausa, McGee) and first-place finisher Oregon were both under the previous Nutter Field House record and Florida’s mark was the second-fastest in the nation this season. The Florida school record in the event is 10:58.77, set in 2012

·         Junior Jayla Bostic has won the weight throw in both meets she’s competed in the season for the Gators (UAB Invite & Rod McCravy), improving her mark to 20.46m/67-1.5 for her win and personal best at the Rod McCravy Memorial

·         Junior Taylor Burke jumped a season-best 1.83m/6-00.00 for second place in the women’s high jump with the fourth-highest mark in the nation so far this season

·         Florida turned in three top-10 finishes in the women’s long jump, led by a season-tying mark and fourth-place jump from junior Ciarra Brewer (5.92m/19-5.25), while senior Lorraine Graham finished seventh (5.86m/19-2.75) in her first outing in the event this season. Junior Brittany Harrell improved upon her jump at the Blazer Invite (5.70m) for a season-best 5.82m/19-1.25 Friday

·         Junior Kyle Strawn notched a fourth-place finish and personal-best mark in the men’s weight throw (19.35m/63-6.00), maintaining the fourth-best performance in UF indoor history

HOLLOWAY’S TAKE

“We got some things done tonight – I was very pleased with Taylor Burke and her effort in the high jump and was really impressed with our women’s distance medley relay. Our women’s long jump didn’t go quite to form, but we did accomplish some things that weren’t reflected in the results. In the men’s distance medley relay, we have to get better; we didn’t get it done tonight. I’m very proud of Jayla (Bostic), not only for a personal best for her (in the weight throw), but for her performance against a very quality field of athletes that scored at the NCAA Division I meet last year. Kyle (Strawn) had a personal best, but I think he would tell you it wasn’t his best. We’re going to get rested tonight; we need to show up tomorrow, engage in the competition and raise the intensity to that of our competitors. If we do that, we’ll be fine.”
