Friday January 24, 2014Florida Tennis Hosting ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Saturday and Sunday

Gainesville, Fla.

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—The Florida men’s tennis team is set to host the sixth annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend this Saturday and Sunday at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. The Gators will be hosting UNC Wilmington, Florida State and TCU with a chance to earn a berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Houston, Texas.

Saturday’s matches are slated to begin at 2 p.m., with Florida playing UNCW on the main courts and the Seminoles and Horned Frogs playing on the back courts. The winner’s of the two matches will play on Sunday at 2 p.m. on the main courts, while a consolation match will be played at 12 p.m. on the back courts.

Florida is 1-0 on the season after opening with a 5-2 win over North Florida on Wednesday. UNCW opened with a 5-2 win over Appalachian State last weekend.

Florida State is 8-0 already on the season, its best start since the 1998 season. TCU will be playing their first dual match of the season on Saturday.

The 25 universities hosting ITA Kick-Off Weekend events were designated as host sites in order of their year-end 2013 ITA team ranking, with five schools serving as dual gender sites. In addition to the men’s matches, the UF women will also be hosting the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, with matches beginning at 10 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

The ITA Kick-Off Weekend will be the first national tournament to use the new, experimental formats decided upon by the ITA Division Operating Committee. The Operating Committee is comprised of 36 men's and women's head coaches, and represents all 12 ITA regions and 13 of the conferences across the country.

Under the experimental format, all sets in singles and doubles will be played to six games, with a tiebreaker at 5-all and no-ad scoring. All third sets will be played out unless the team match is decided. In addition, all matches will be played under the “clinch-clinch” format. Once the doubles point is decided the remaining doubles matches are halted, and once the team match is clinched in singles play, the remaining singles matches will be halted. There will also be no warm-up against opponents.

FROM THE COACH – Head Coach Bryan Shelton

“I expect [this weekend] to be tough. It’s going to be a battle. Last year we played UNCW in the first round [of the ITA Kick-Off] and they gave us all we could handle, so we certainly aren’t taking anyone lightly. Just like UNF came in here [Wednesday] and played us tough.

“There’s so much parity now in college athletics. You see teams that you don’t expect go in there and knock off top teams. You always have to be ready because they’re going to give you their best shot. We’ve got to have that same mentality when we take the court – that we’ve got to give them our very best shot. I can’t tell you what I’m going to get for sure from the other teams this weekend, but we better be ready to compete.”
