Sunday January 12, 2014Gators Eliminated from USTA Futures in Sunrise
The Florida menís tennis team wrapped up play on Sunday at the USTA Futures event in Sunrise, Fla. All three Gators in action lost three-set matches in the second round. The team will now return to Gainesville to prepare for its final individual tournament of the season next weekend, the Fighting Illini Invitational in Fort Myers.
Spencer Newman and Diego Hidalgo, seeing their first action of the 2013-14 season, each won their first set in Sundayís second round. Newman, playing Canadian Hugo Di Feo, took the first set 6-4, but then fell 6-1, 6-0 and was eliminated.
Hidalgo played American Francis Tiafoe in a tight match, taking the first set 7-5 before dropping the second set 5-7. He then lost the match in a tiebreak, 6-7 (5).
Senior Mike Alford also lost in three sets, falling 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to American Kyle Seelig.
