Friday January 10, 2014Newman Advances to Second Round at USTA Futures in Sunrise
Spencer Newman won his opening match at the USTA Futures event in Sunrise, Fla., on Friday afternoon while Florent Diep dropped his first match. Three additional Gators will begin play on Saturday. The tournament is being played at the Sunrise Tennis Club.
Newman, in his first action with the Gators since rejoining the team in January of 2013, breezed through the first round with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ethan Ammon from Trinidad. Newman will face either Felipe Escobar or Martins Podzus in the second round on Sunday.
“Spencer had a good win this afternoon,” said head coach Bryan Shelton. “It was good for him to get a match under his belt and be able to gain some confidence.”
Diep, from Paris, France, fell to American Carter Lin, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round on Friday.
“It’s a different kind of tournament than we’re used to because we can’t coach out there on the court,” said Shelton. “I would’ve liked to see Flo make some adjustments out there that he didn’t make. He’ll get back to work tomorrow though.”
Weather played a factor in the morning’s action, forcing the bottom half of the draw to be delayed until Saturday due to rain and flooding of some courts. Beginning play on Saturday will be Mike Alford, Diego Hidalgo, Elliott Orkin and Maxx Lipman.
“Overall it was a good day for us,” Shelton said. “We got a lot of work done - even the guys that didn’t get to play their matches. We got good practice in and they’ll play tomorrow.”
Results for the Gator players will be posted on GatorZone.com when available at the conclusion of the day’s play.
