Wednesday January 8, 2014Gators Aim to Extend Eight-Game Win Streak Thursday vs. Arkansas

Gainesville, Fla.

January Miller was clutch down the stretch in UF's last win.

Florida returns to the friendly confines of the O’Connell Center where the Gators are 8-1 this season and play host to No. 25 Arkansas on Thursday at 7 p.m.

This will be the first of two regular-season meetings this year between the Gators and Razorbacks, with the next outing taking place on Feb. 8 in Fayetteville.

·         UF head coach Amanda Butler previewed the game:

·         Sophomores January Miller and Christin Mercer shared their thoughts about the Gator’s win streak and playing at home Thursday:

Streaking Along Overall

·         Florida boasts an eight-game winning streak entering Thursday’s contest against Arkansas.

·         The last time Florida won eight consecutive games was during the 2008-09 campaign, when the team lost its season-opener before rattling off 15 straight victories.

Streaking Along in the SEC

·         Florida is 2-0 in the SEC for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

·         The last time the Gators started their league schedule 3-0 was during the 1997-98 season, when the team defeated Alabama (Dec. 21), before downing Kentucky (Jan. 4) and Georgia (Jan. 7)

·         The 1996-97 club won its first five SEC games (Amanda Butler was an assistant coach on that Gator team; Murriel Page was a junior that year)

Gator Watch

·         Four Gators average a double-figure scoring effort: Jaterra Bonds (17.2 ppg), January Miller (12.1 ppg), Christin Mercer (11.6 ppg) and Cassie Peoples (11.5 ppg).

·         Kayla Lewis has been the top Gator on the boards, pulling down 8.1 per game, followed by Ronni Williams’ 6.9 per game mark and Mercer’s 6.2 effort.

·         Bonds is dishing 4.4 assists per game, with Peoples handing out 3.7.

·         Four different Gators have recorded at least 20 steals en route to the team’s 10.9 per game average, with Miller collecting 27, Bonds 26, Peoples 25 and Mercer 21.

The Series vs. Arkansas

·         Florida leads the 30-game series, 22-8, including a 9-3 record in Gainesville.

·         The Gators have won the last two meetings - both played last year (in Gainesville and in the SEC Tournament second round)

·         Florida has won five of the last six games against Arkansas.

·         Arkansas last win was a double-overtime decision on Jan. 29, 2012 in Fayetteville.

·         The Razorback’s last win in Gainesville was an 83-74 final on Feb. 19, 2009

Quick Scout - Arkansas

·         The Razorbacks raced out to a 13-0 record to begin the season, the second-best start in program history.

·         UA’s only loss this year was a 55-51 loss to then-No. 13 (current No. 10) South Carolina on Jan. 2.

·         Arkansas features the nation’s top-ranked scoring defense, allowing just 46.7 points per game.

·         The Razorbacks rank second in the nation in three-point field goal percentage, shooting 41.3 percent from beyond the arc.

·         Freshman McKenzie Adams leads the long-range brigade with 47.7 percent (31-65).

·         Freshman forward Jessica Jackson is the team’s leading scorer at 15.3 points per game, converting 44.8 percent from the floor that includes a 39.7 percent (23-58) mark from three-pointers, and a 75.8 percent clip (50-66) from the free throw line.

Last TimeOut

·         Jaterra Bonds scored a game-high 23 points, freshman Ronni Williams posted her third double-double and Florida knocked off No. 6 Kentucky, 83-73, at Memorial Coliseum on Jan. 5.

·         In addition to Bonds’ sixth 20-point game of the season and Williams’ career-high 19 point, 10 rebound performance, Christin Mercer and January Miller both added 10 points, as all eight Gators who suited up, scored in the game.

What’s All the Fuss?

Florida’s 83-73 upset win at No. 6 Kentucky on Jan. 5 made the headlines. Why?

Entering the game:

·         UF had lost nine straight games to ranked teams (last win was March 18, 2012 vs. No. 16 Ohio State in NCAA First Round)

·         UF had not defeated a top-10 team since Feb. 26, 2006 (at No. 5 Tennessee, 95-93 in overtime)

·         UF was 0-19 under Coach Butler vs. top-10 teams

·         The win was the 29th upset win vs. a ranked team when UF was unranked

·         The win was the 15th in program history vs. a top-10 team

Bonds, Jaterra Bonds

·         Senior Jaterra Bonds is doing it all in her final collegiate season. She leads the Gators in scoring (17.2 ppg), assists (4.4 apg), made free throws (91) and free throw attempts (112), while hitting 46.0 percent of her shots from the floor and collecting 1.7 steals per game.

Quick Shots

·         Kayla Lewis has logged a double-figure REBOUNDING effort in 5 of the last 8 games and is averaging 9.4 points and 9.4 rebounds during the last eight games.

·         Cassie Peoples has scored double-figures in seven of the last 8 games and is averaging 15.5 points during that span.

·         In the last eight games, Carlie Needles has knocked down 10 of her 15 three-pointers this year, sinking 34.5 percent (10-29) of her tries during the run. In the first seven games, she went 5-30 (16.7%) from deep.

Peoples Relishes Starting Assignment

·         Since Cassie Peoples was inserted into the starting lineup on Dec. 4 at Troy, the sophomore is averaging 16.3 points, while connecting on 42.4 percent overall from the floor, including 33.3 percent (10-30) from the three-point arc during the seven-game span.

Rookie Review

·         Ronni Williams, the Gator’s lone freshman, is averaging 9.3 points on 48.8 percent shooting, along with an impressive 6.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.

·         She has three double-doubles, the most recent a 19-point, 10-rebound effort at No. 6 Kentucky (Jan. 5)

Breaking Down UF’s Eight-Game Streak

·         During the eight-game winning streak, UF is averaging 86.2 points per game and winning by a margin of 16.9 points per game.

·         5 different Gators have been the team’s leading game scorer in the eight games: Bonds (3), Mercer, Lewis (2), Peoples and Miller

·         4 Gators are averaging a double-figure scoring effort, paced by Jaterra Bonds’ 16.9 ppg. Bonds has also contributed during the run 4.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game.

·         Kayla Lewis averages 9.4 points and 9.4 rebounds, while shooting 60.5 percent from the floor

·         The Gators average 27.6 free throw attempts per game, while limiting opponents to 20.0 tries per game

You Want SEC Thrillers? We Play Them!

·         Florida’s last meeting against 11 of the 13 other teams from the SEC has been decided by 10 points or less.

·         The only two that were not were each decided by 11 points: the 11-point loss at South Carolina on March 3, 2013 (67-56) and the 11-point loss to Vanderbilt on Feb. 21, 2013 (68-57).

·         Seven of UF’s last 11 games have been decided by 10 points or less (5-2 record in those games).

Quotes from the Court

“The individual confidence of beating such a strong team on its home floor is significant after all the years we’ve gone there and played well enough to win but didn’t. It was a great boost to our team and I’m really happy for them.” – UF head coach Amanda Butler on the team’s win at No. 6 Kentucky on Sunday

“Tom (Collen) is a great coach and one of the strongest things he does is the level of consistency. You see a lot of the same things that make his teams competitive. Ever since I’ve had the opportunity to coach against him, his team has dynamic guards that make plays on high on-balls. They are shooting the ball really, really well. I think they have a great deal of confidence from their non-conference success. Getting that win at Missouri, which is a tough place to play, was significant. His teams are always ready to play. It’s going to be good to be back at home, but we’re going to have a tough challenge.” – Butler on Arkansas

“They have really talented pieces. They have a really steady point guard in (Calli) Berna. (Jessica) Jackson is the freshman who is having a fantastic freshman year so far. She’s a hometown kid so it’s special for her to be playing at her home university. She’s scoring a lot of point, shooting the ball well like all of them do, rebounding, has great size and length. They make it really tough to guard them in a lot of different ways. Jackson is doing a great job of scoring points, getting rebounds and making big, big plays not like she’s a freshman, but more like seniors do.” – Butler on Arkansas individuals
