Florida Head Coach Mary Wise

Opening statement

“As soon as we saw the draw, we talked to the team about playing JU. Even before we watched them on video, our prediction was that they were going to be a reflection of their coaching staff. One of the best NCAA matches we’ve had in terms of just exciting, high-level play was against Michelle Collier’s South Florida team when she was a senior. I think the Jacksonville team resembles her in terms of their grittiness. (Sammie) Strausbaugh, we’ve watched her on video. We saw her last year as a freshman. We knew they were getting her the ball. I think there are great things for Jacksonville in the future. Tonight, it was a matter of when we were in system. Chloe (Mann) put up another average offensive performance, hitting 700. We felt like we had a sizeable advantage when we could control the first contact.  We did a really nice job of that and got some transition digs to allow us to score off the serve.”

Florida Senior Chloe Mann

On getting the first NCAA match out of the way:

“It’s definitely a relief. We’re taking it one game at a time, and so this is one of, hopefully, six matches that we’re going to play. I think we all did a really good job of coming out strong in the first set and maintaining that all three sets.”

On what changed in the second set:

“I think they put up a good defensive effort. I think as the match went on we got into more of a flow offensively. Our passers did a better job of hitting up good balls for Taylor (Brauneis), who distributed awesomely tonight, as shown by numbers. We just got more of a flow of things and started out more smoothly.”

Florida Sophomore Simone Antwi

On her expectations for tomorrow night:

“As always, Florida State is always a battle. So we’re expecting it to be a good game. Good volleyball and a good rivalry so I’m excited.”

On what the team will take from playing them earlier in the season:

“We’re just looking at it as tournament time, so teams are different. They’re playing different. We’re going to watch the film, break them down and then play them just like we’ve always played them: hard.”
