Gator junior Maddy Monserez was named to the 2013 SEC Community Service Team Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Two days following the University of Florida volleyball team’s annual Thanksgiving weekend visit to UF Health, and in the midst of the UAA’s Gator Tracks holiday community service program, Gator junior defensive specialist Madison Monserez was named to the 2013 SEC Volleyball Community Service Team for the first time in her collegiate career.

Leading the Gators’ community service efforts throughout the fall semester, Monserez accumulated the most volunteer hours of the volleyball squad demonstrating Florida’s emphasis not only on academics and athletics, but in the local community. Through UF’s Office of Student Life and the Goodwill Gators program, Monserez has participated in 10 community service activities throughout the year so far, including three visits to Shands Infusion Room at UF Health. Monserez also participated in a Caleb’s Pitch Syringe Art session, where she spent time with young UF Health patients filling medicine syringes with paint to design art on canvas. Caleb’s Pitch aims to help create a memento of a positive experience in the hospital for young children through art.

Monserez has additionally volunteered her time this fall at St. Francis House, serving the homeless of Gainesville and she – along with the entire Gator volleyball team – volunteered at UF’s annual Climb for Cancer event, where Gator student-athletes play in sports-related activities with children fighting various forms of cancer.

Florida capped off its regular-season schedule with a team trip to UF Health over the Thanksgiving weekend before gathering for the 2013 NCAA Volleyball Selection Show Dec. 1. The Gators picked up the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will play host to the NCAA First & Second Rounds in Gainesville Dec. 5-6.

Monserez and number of other Florida student-athletes and UAA staff members will conclude the holiday giving season with the Gator Tracks ‘angel tree’-type program by purchasing new sneakers for elementary children in Gainesville in need of new shoes. Before the fall semester is over, student-athletes play “Santa” and deliver new shoes to each school in the program.

A key contributor for the Orange and Blue on the court, the defensive specialist has played in 27 matches this season with six starts. Monserez has recorded 100 digs and boasts a .964 reception percentage. Illustrating her academic dedication, Monserez is also a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
