GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Gators sought a much-needed win on Saturday afternoon against Georgia Southern.

The Eagles had something entirely different in mind -- their first win over an FBS opponent.

Advantage Georgia Southern after defeating the Gators 26-20 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

For the Gators it was their sixth consecutive loss; for the Eagles it was their first win over an FBS opponent in 21 tries.

THE QUICK SLANT

WHAT IT MEANS: The Gators lost their sixth consecutive game to drop to 4-7, ensuring the program's first losing record since going 0-10-1 in 1979. The Gators' bowl streak, which dates to 1991, is also over.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Gators running back Kelvin Taylor rushed eight times for 54 yards on Florida's opening drive, which ended with a touchdown. However, he mustered only 38 yards the rest of the game.

STAGGERING STATISTIC: This one is easy. Georgia Southern rushed for 429 yards, passed for 0 yards.

SUBPLOT: Florida quarterback Skyler Mornhinweg made his first career home start and finished 14 of 22 for 122 yards and one touchdown. Mornhinweg struggled for most of the game but did drive UF into scoring territory on the final drive, but it was too little too late for the second consecutive week.

UP NEXT: Florida hosts No. 2-ranked Florida State next week in the regular-season finale for both teams. For the Gators, they will have nothing to lose and a victory would make their season. As for the Seminoles, they are playing to keep their national championship hopes alive.
