TUSCALOOSA, Ala. Ė After hosting the 2013 SEC Cross Country Championships Nov. 1, the Gator cross country teams will head to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for competition at the 2013 NCAA South Region Championships Friday at Harry Pritchett Running Park, aiming for top-two finishes to automatically qualify for 2013 nationals.


A total of 35 womenís teams and 27 menís teams Ė along with several individual competitors Ė will be represented at the South Region Championship and the top two team finishers at the nine NCAA regional sites across the country will automatically qualify for the 2013 NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., Nov. 23. Select teams and individuals from squads outside the top two at each regional could still qualify for NCAAs with several at-large bids, which will be announced by the NCAA Sunday.

Floridaís men, jumping from an 8K to a 10K at regionals, will be looking for a second team nationals berth in the last three years after picking up two individual at-large bids in 2012 and qualifying as a team in 2011 with a second-place regionals finish. The Florida women look to head to nationals as a team for the seventh time in the last eight years after picking up a team at-large bid last season.



At the 2013 SEC Championships for Florida, junior Jimmy Clark turned in a fifth-place 8K finish on the menís side (23:57.03) and senior Agata Strausa clocked a fourth-place and personal best 6K race (20:17.79) for the Gator women to lead UFís cross country teams to second (96) and fourth-place finishes (150), respectively, at SECs on their home course November 1. In addition to Strausaís personal best performance, freshman Carlos Miranda clocked a lifetime-best mark in his first SEC Championships as the menís squad made it 17 straight years of top-five finishes, 12 of those top-three finishes. Florida last finished second on the menís side in 2011. For Floridaís women, the fourth-place finish Friday was the Gatorsí 10th straight season as a top-five finisher at the league championships. Five Florida student-athletes earned 2013 All-SEC honors: Jimmy Clark (First), Mark Parrish (Second), Eddie Garcia (Second), Carlos Miranda (All-Freshman), Agata Strausa (First).

         Florida enters regionals ranked No. 1 in the region on the menís side and No. 2 in the region in the womenís USTFCCCA South Region rankings

         Last year, UFís men finished third in the South Region Championships, leading current senior Mark Parrish and junior Jimmy Clark to NCAA individual at-large bids for the national championship race. The Gators last qualified as a team for nationals on the menís side in 2011 and last won regionals in 1990

         On the womenís side, UF placed fourth at the 2012 South Region Championship and picked up an NCAA at-large team bid. The Gators then turned in a 23rd-place finish at 2012 nationals. Florida last won the south regional in 2009, when it went on to finish a program-best seventh at NCAAs

         The Gators have only had one South Region individual champion on the menís side, as Steve Zieminski picked up the menís victory in 2004 (29:35.86), while the women own four regional championships, one from Shelly Steely (í84), one from Coralena Velson (1992), one from Becki Wells (1997) and the most recent from Rebecca Lowe in 2009

         The UF menís squad has twice won regionals: 1986 and 1990. On the womenís side, the Gators have three regional championships: 1997, 1998 and 2009 (was District IX in 1997, as south region started in 1998)

         The school record for a menís 10k is 29:19.2 (Keith Brantly, 1983) and the womenís 6k school record is 19:44.04 (Erin Merten, 2001)

         Parrish has been UFís top finisher on the menís side at regionals the past two seasons, with fifth-place finishes at both the 2011 and 2012 NCAA South Region Championships

         Senior Shelby Hayes finished 29th for the Gators at last yearís regionals, the highest finishing 2013 returner on the womenís side
