Carlie Needles and the Gators make their first road trip of the season.

Florida makes its first road trip of the season, traveling on Thursday to Blacksburg, Va., to play Virginia Tech in Cassell Coliseum beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

Thursday should be a solid, early-season matchup between Florida and Virginia Tech, as both teams enter the game with 2-0 records and both have been dominating offensively.

VIDEO (FREE): Lily Svete and January Miller talk about Thursday’s matchup:

Quotes from the Court:

·         “Virginia Tech is a great, great rebounding team. They have a lot of size. They have had a blow-out win where they had 63 rebounds in one game against Howard, which is statistically amazing, and then went to Old Dominion, which is a very hard place to play, and beat them on their own court. UF head coach Amanda Butler on Virginia Tech in general

·         “This is a version of Virginia Tech that we haven’t seen in a while. They are a very well-coached team, have great size, can shoot the ball, have amazing individual rebounds, have experience in players like Uju Ugoka. They have new guards playing important positions in their starting and backup point guards. They have great experience at other positions. UF head coach Amanda Butler on Virginia Tech’s specifics

·         “They have a really, really explosive player in Monet Tellier. She’s very, very capable of doing some great things in a game. UF head coach Amanda Butler on Virginia Tech’s senior guard Monte Tellier

·         There are going to be a lot of challenges that we will discover along the way, hopefully, most of it will be positive. Certainly, there will be adversity that will be waiting for us in the form of who knows what: from a late bus to their crowd and feeling the energy of what another team’s crowd will be, to the wrong food that gets delivered to the hotel for dinner. You just never know what’s going to happen so we have to make sure we’re focused on the main things that’s us and how we do things and make sure we don’t waiver from that. Stat Watch

·         Rebounding could be a key to Thursday’s game and the edge might go to the Hokies, who have out-rebounded their opponents, 107-71 (+18.0) in their two games.

·         The Gators were out-rebounded by 12 in their win against North Florida but held a 7-board advantage in their season-opener against Bethune-Cookman.

Last TimeOut

·         The Gators led North Florida by double-digits for most of the first half, but the Ospreys pulled within three, 57-54, with 13:39 on the clock in the second stanza.

·         Jaterra Bonds, however, hit a pair of free throws and sparked a 13-1 run and the Gators took a 70-55 lead and held UNF at bay by at least nine points for the remainder of the game. Bonds scored a career-high 25 points, bolstered by a 7-of-9 performance from the charity stripe, and dished out a career-high-tying nine assists and added seven rebounds

·         Virginia Tech opened its season with a dominating 84-32 win at home against Howard, before taking an impressive 73-61 win at Old Dominion on Monday.

Last Week

·         The Gators launched their 40th season of varsity competition with a 93-65 win against Bethune-Cookman and an 88-77 victory versus North Florida.

Opening Weekend Highlights

·         The season-opening win versus Bethune-Cookman was the first time in program history that Florida had seven players in double-figure scoring. UF followed that with five players in double-figures against North Florida, paced by senior Jaterra Bonds’ career-high 25 points and a career-high-tying nine assists

Quite a Debut

·         Ronni Williams posted a double-double in her first collegiate game and became just the second Gator freshman to do so since Nov. 20, 1981, when All-American and U.S. Olympian Tammy Jackson netted 13 points and 12 rebounds against Virginia.

·         Williams’ 17 rebounds are the most ever by a player in their Gator debut, topping the 13 boards collected by junior Courtney Cooper on Nov. 16, 2001, and sophomore Benita Locklear on Dec. 4, 1976.

Ronni Recognized

·         Ronni Williams was named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week, as the league announced its inaugural 2013-14 weekly awards Monday.

Seniors Setting Up

·         Senior Jaterra Bonds and Lily Svete are UF’s top-two offensive leaders through the first two games.

·         Bonds is doing it all with 17.5 points, 8.5 assists, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals, while hitting 11-of-14 free throws.

·         Svete has carried the long-range load, knocking down 8-of-16 from beyond the arc en route to 13.5 points per game.

Trey Good

·         Florida has converted 10 three-pointers in both of its first two games, marking the first time the Gators have knocked down double-digit three-pointers in consecutive games since the 2009 season, when the team hit 13 on Feb. 1 at Arkansas and 11 on Feb. 5 at Alabama.

·         The Gators are sinking their long-range shots at 40-percent clip (10-20).
