WHAT IT MEANS: The 10th-ranked Gators extended their run of consecutive wins in season openers to 23 straight. The last time UF lost the first game of a season was the first game of Coach Lon Kruger’s tenure -- way back in 1990 -- when the Gators fell 70-61 at South Florida.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Casey and Kasey. Senior forward Casey Prather scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while freshman point guard Kasey Hill, the former McDonald’s All-American replacing suspended senior Scottie Wilbekin in the starting lineup, finished with 15 points and four assists.
STAGGERING STATISTIC: Well, it’s not exactly staggering, but UF coach Billy Donovan will make it so in the coming days after watching the Ospreys go 9-for-22 from the 3-point line. The hot hand from deep enabled UNF to cut an 18-point first-half lead to five early in the second half and stick around the rest of the game.
SUBPLOT: Sophomore shooting guard Michael Frazier was in bed with mononucleosis much of the last two weeks. Cleared to practice just two days ago, Frazier played way more minutes than expected against the Ospreys and finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.
UP NEXT: UF has three days to figure some things out before heading north to Big Ten land to face 20th-ranked Wisconsin at the Kohl Center, one of the toughest venues to play in the nation.
