AT THE BUZZER
Florida 110, Florida Southern 88
WHAT IT MEANS: Nothing and something. The win doesn’t count on the records, but UF coach Billy Donovan got to look at what this particular collection of players can do -- a nine-man rotation with two walk-ons -- minus his three suspended players. If Michael Frazier (mononucleosis) isn’t cleared medically for the start of the season, this will be your Florida Gators to open the regular season.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Freshman point guard Kasey Hill, the McDonald’s All-American from Montverde (Fla.) Academy, wowed the crowd with his speed and explosiveness, both in the open floor and attacking the paint in the halfcourt. He finished with 17 points on 6-for-13 shooting, but Donovan will want more than three assists out of his playmaker.
STAGGERING STATISTIC: Florida Southern went 13 of 30 from the 3-point line (43.3 percent), but started the game by making 11 of its first 21. Better believe closing out the arc will be a huge emphasis at practice this week (especially with a Game 2 date at Wisconsin).
SUBPLOT: Walk-ons Jake Kurtz and Billy Donovan saw plenty of action. Kurtz started at the power forward spot and scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Donovan, the son of the coach and transfer from Division III Catholic, scored five points, including a long 3-pointer that drew a big smile from a certain coache on the UF bench.
UP NEXT: The Gators open the regular season Nov. 8 -- next Friday -- against North Florida. It’ll be homecoming weekend, so the game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. tipoff -- after the parade and before Gator Growl.
