The 2013 SEC Cross Country Championships kick off at 8:45 a.m. in Gainesville Friday, Nov. 1, at UF’s Mark Bostick Golf Course and the Orange and Blue will aim to keep the SEC trophy in Gainesville another year on the women’s side, while the Gator men will shoot for their first league championship since 1987.

Admission is free to the 2013 SEC Cross Country Championships and spectator parking for the event is located at the University of Florida Law School.

Friday’s races kick off at approximately 8:45 a.m. with the national anthem, as the men’s 8K is slated for 9 a.m. (ET), while the women’s 6K is set for 10 a.m. (ET). The awards ceremony will begin at 11:15 a.m. at UF’s golf course.

UF is hosting the league championships for the first time since 2002, having previously played host to SECs in ’73, ’81 and ’90 as well. The University of Florida has won three of the last four women’s team titles (2009, 2010, 2012) and will have a shot at its seventh in Gator history on its home course, while Arkansas won three straight from 2006-2008 and Vanderbilt claimed the Commodores’ first SEC title in 2011. On the men’s side, Arkansas has won 20 of the last 22 SEC Championship titles, with Alabama breaking up the streak with back-to-back championships in 2008 and 2009.

FLORIDA MEN’S NOTABLES

·         2013 Performance Chart

·         8K School Record: 23:34 (Mark Parrish, 10/19/13 Wisconsin adidas Invitational)

·         Last SEC Individual Champion: Keith Brantly, 1983

·         Last SEC Team Championship: 1987

·         Total SEC Championships: 3 | 1955, 1986, 1987

·         2012 SEC Finish: 5th (121 points)

·         2012 Top Performer (returning): Mark Parrish (7th place, 24:06.09)

·         NOTABLES: On the Florida men’s side, the Gators are seeking their first SEC Championship in 25 years (1955, 1986, 1987). UF has been a top-five finisher at SECs for 16 straight years, 11 of those consisting of top-three finishes. The Orange and Blue were the SEC runner-up in 2011 and finished fifth last season at SECs. Individually speaking, UF returns two 2012 All-SEC First Team performers – one on each side – in seniors Mark Parrish and Agata Strausa and UF will be led for the second year by 2012 SEC Women’s Coach of the Year Paul Spangler. Parrish holds UF’s fastest 8K mark this season after he eclipsed the school record at the Wisconsin adidas Invite two weeks ago. Both Parrish and junior Jimmy Clark ran top-10 8K performances at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in September at UF’s Mountain Dew Invitational. Five Gators ran lifetime best marks last time out for Florida at the adidas Invite, including Parrish’s school record and Clark’s 23:52, the 10th fastest 8K in the UF men’s record books.

FLORIDA WOMEN’S NOTABLES

·         2013 Performance Chart

·         6K School Record: 19:44.04 (Erin Merten, 10/29/01 SEC Championship)

·         Last SEC Individual Champion: Rebecca Lowe, 2009

·         Last SEC Team Championship: 2012

·         2012 SEC Finish: 1st (161 points)

·         2012 Top Performer (returning): Agata Strausa (6th place, 20:40.96)

·         NOTABLES: On the women’s side for the Gators, Florida has six overall SEC titles (1984, 1996, 1997, 2009, 2010, 2012), second most for a SEC women’s squad, and has finished in the top five at the SEC Championship nine straight years, while checking in in the top three five consecutive seasons. UF will look to win back-to-back titles for the second time and keep the trophy in Gainesville after winning the 2012 SEC title. Individually speaking, UF returns two 2012 All-SEC First Team performers – one on each side – in seniors Mark Parrish and Agata Strausa and UF will be led for the second year by 2012 SEC Women’s Coach of the Year Paul Spangler. On both sides of the program, UF has seen times drastically drop through the season and UF’s women were no exception with three lifetime-best runs at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational Oct. 19. Strausa holds UF’s top 6K mark entering the championships after crossing in 20:18 in Madison, the sixth-fastest 6K in program history.
