GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- With each passing preseason projection, Florida’s Dec. 10 home date with Kansas in ESPN’s Big 12/SEC Challenge is shaping up as one of the biggest non-conference home games in the Gators’ basketball history.
KU freshman forward Andrew Wiggins already has graced the cover of Sports Illustrated and been placed in the rarified air as a couple former Jayhawks named Wilt Chamberlain and Danny Manning.
On Tuesday, KU coach Bill Self brought Wiggins to Big 12 Media Day in Kansas City, where the 6-foot-8, 200-pound Canadian (by way of Huntington [W.Va.] Prep) became the first freshman in league history voted to the Preseason All-Big 12 team and found himself fending off comparisons to LeBron James and Kevin Durant.
“Those are the best players in the world right now and I’m still in college,” Wiggins said. “So I think it’s really unfair to compare me to someone of that caliber. Hopefully, one day I can be compared to them, but I think I still have a long way to go before I can be.”
The road that NBA scouts and analysts already say could lead to Wiggins being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 draft -- projected to be one of the best drafts in league history, by the way -- will bring Wiggins to the O’Connell Center to face Coach Billy Donovan’s bunch for what will be the seventh game of his career.
Tickets for the game remain available as part of a special 3-game plan where fans can select which games they want to see (details here) and also through a 10-game offer for recent UF graduates (details here).
Kansas, which went 31-6 last season and lost to Michigan in the Sweet 16, was ranked No. 6 in the USA Today/Coaches Poll released last week. Florida, which went 29-8 and also had its season ended by the Wolverines in the Elite Eight, checked in at No. 8.
The showdown with the Jayhawks is far from the only marquee attraction on the UF schedule during the 2013-14 season. The Gators also host Florida State on the eve of their annual football clash, plus get O’Dome SEC visits from Tennessee, Missouri, Alabama and a Senior Day regular-season finale against Kentucky.
