Senior Alexandra Cercone had a strong showing at the regional event.

UF’s Alexandra Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) lost in the singles final at the 2013 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships held at Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Monday.

Cercone battled hard in the first set, but dropped the tiebreak 7-6 (2) to Georgia’s Silvia Garcia, who then took the second set, 6-1, to claim the regional title and earn an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, considered the second leg of the collegiate grand slam.

Cercone must now wait and learn if she will receive an at-large into the national event held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., the site of the U.S. Open Championships, Nov. 7-10.
