Sophomore Lauren Smith is the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week

A goal in each half in Friday’s win earned Florida’s Lauren Smith (Eustis, Fla.) the Southeastern Conference Defensive Soccer Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning.

SEC Players of the Week – 10/21/13

Offensive – Alyssa Diggs, Missouri

Defensive – Lauren Smith, Florida

Freshman – Casie Ramsier, Auburn

Lauren Smith scored Florida’s first and final goals in a 3-0 win over No. 23 Kentucky Friday, both off of assists from junior midfielder Havana Solaun. In the seventh minute, Solaun’s end line cross took a bounce in the box, where Lauren Smith took a touch and then put it in at the left corner with her right foot. Her second goal came off a long, left-footed strike in the 56th minute. Solaun took a shot which kicked off the crossbar. The deflection was eventually controlled by Solaun just wide of the box. Her centering pass found Lauren Smith coming down the middle of the field. She registered her first collegiate multi-goal match with a 20-yard low, hard shot to the far post.

With two Gators turning in double-goal matches this weekend, Florida’s total of multi-goal matches in 2013 now is at seven. Lauren Smith and Solaun each have one and freshman Savannah Jordan has five. Three have come in SEC play (Smith - Kentucky, Jordan - Alabama and LSU).

The Gators’ final full weekend of league play is an away-home weekend. Play begins at Tennessee (7-6-3, 2-4-2 SEC) on Friday, Oct. 25. Match time is set for 7 p.m. ET at the Regal Soccer Stadium. Friday’s match airs live on SUN Sports (Gainesville/Ocala Cox cable 1048).

Then the Gators return home to play host to SEC leader Texas A&M (12-3-1, 7-1 SEC) on Sunday, Oct. 27. Match time is set for 3 p.m. at the James G. Pressly Stadium and admission is free. Sunday’s match will air on ESPNU (Gainesville/Ocala Cox cable 251 or 1251). Audio and stats for both matches this weekend are available on GatorZone.com.
