Tuesday October 15, 2013Swimming's Mitch D'Arrigo Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Freshman swimmer Mitch D’Arrigo has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for his performance in last week’s 172-124 dual meet victory over Minnesota, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
D’Arrigo, originally from Rome, Italy, is a mid-distance freestyler and has fit nicely into the Gators rotation during the early portion of the season. In last week’s dual with the Golden Gophers, a program that finished 18th at last year’s NCAA Championship, D’Arrigo earned his first collegiate win with a first place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:26.35).
In addition to his 500 free victory, D’Arrigo posted a 200 free time of 1:39.17 in a third place finish behind teammates junior Eduardo Solaeche-Gomez (Madrid, Spain) and sophomore Corey Main (Auckland, New Zealand).
D’Arrigo, making the transition from long course meters to yards, posted his fastest time in the 500 free (4:26.04) at the Pinch A Penny All Florida Invitational at the end of September. Both the Gators men’s and women’s teams won the annual event over in-state opponents for the fourth consecutive year.
The Gators will next compete in a dual meet this Thursday against Missouri in Columbia. The women’s team will then travel to Berkley, Calif., to take on California for a two-day meet beginning Saturday.
