Sunday October 13, 2013Mitchell with a Career Day as Gators Slip One Spot to Finish Eighth at the Tar Heel Invitational

Chapel Hill, N.C.

Falling one spot on the leaderboard from day two, the University of Florida women’s golf team placed eighth out of 18 teams at the 2013 Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational – one step up from the Gators’ ninth-place finish last fall.

Seeing an eight-stroke difference from round one to round three, redshirt sophomore Katie Mitchell had a career day today: she took the top spot for Florida at the Tar Heel Invite, matching a career-low (69) and capturing her best individual finish donning the Orange and Blue at T11.

Both freshmen Karolina Vlckova and Maria Torres leave UNC Finley Golf Course at a final five-over (221) followed by juniors Sarah Schober and Camilla Hedberg who finished seven-over (223) and 17-over (233), respectively. As an individual competitor this weekend, junior Anna Young improved on her finish at the 2012 Tar Heel Invite (245) by a notable 17 strokes and shot 12-over (228) for this tournament.

Florida finished over four top-25 ranked teams at the 2013 Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational – No. 14 NC State, No. 20 Michigan State, No. 16 Virginia and No. 15 UNC – and advanced 14 strokes from last year.

Head Coach Emily Glaser Says: “Katie [Mitchell] had a great tournament and rebounded well after the first day. Today was her first round in the 60s as a Gator and I am sure there will be many more to come.”

“Our finish in this tournament wasn’t what we wanted, but the girls are learning a lot and assistant coach Janice Olivencia and I are learning a lot about their games and what we need to improve on. This team is very talented and they do a lot of things well, we just need to be more consistent and limit our mistakes.”
