Friday October 11, 2013Florida Freshmen Excel in First Round of the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational

Chapel Hill, N.C.

The No. 5 Gators women’s golf team was led by the two youngest members during the first round of the 2013 Tar Heel Invitational. Freshmen Karolina Vlckova was the lone Gator to finish under-par (70), making three birdies on the day and scoring a top-5 individual spot. Fellow freshman Maria Torres shot a solid two-over (74) to begin her tournament play.

Juniors Sarah Schober and Camilla Hedberg and redshirt sophomore Katie Mitchell all proved consistent in round one, finishing five-over (77).  Anna Young competed as an individual, shooting a final three-over (75) and made a team-leading four birdies in round one.

As a team, Florida finished twelfth over four ranked opponents: No. 2 Alabama, No. 24 South Carolina, No. 20 Michigan State and No. 16 Virginia. Round two will tee off at 8:51 a.m. tomorrow at UNC Finley Golf Course and will give the Gators women’s golf team a chance to advance at the Tar Heel Invitational.

Head Coach Emily Glaser Says: “Our freshmen had a great day today and I’m proud of them for showing maturity on a difficult scoring day. Overall as a team we struggled, but it wasn’t because of lack of effort. The team fought hard all day, we just didn’t take advantage of the opportunities we had. When you are playing a difficult golf course, you must capitalize on the scoring opportunities when you have them.”

“We have two more days and if we stay determined and patient, we will be able to climb up the leaderboard.”

SEC Showdown: Representing the SEC, No. 19 Vanderbilt finished day one in first place (285) by one stroke over Duke. Auburn, Ole Miss, LSU and No. 8 Arkansas also finished in the top-10.
