Thursday October 10, 2013First Day of Women's Tennis Bedford Cup Action Concludes

Gainesville, Fla.

Freshman Stefani Stojic made her collegiate singles debut on Thursday.

University of Florida freshman Stefani Stojic (Melbourne, Australia) was the only Gator in action on the first day of play at the 2013 Bedford Cup held at the Ring Tennis Complex on Thursday.

The Gator rookie faltered in her collegiate singles debut, dropping a 7-6 (6), 6-1 decision to USF’s Olaya Garrido-Riyas. Stojic had a chance to serve for the first set with leads of 5-4 and 6-5, but wasn’t able to polished off the frame en route to the setback.

Stojic will continue competition on Friday at Florida’s only home event of the fall schedule, as she plays Bethune-Cookman’s Chinatsu Kajiwara in the consolation draw’s round of 16.

The Gators will be in full swing at the four-day tournament on Friday, when freshmen Kourtney Keegan and Belinda Woolcock, as well as senior Olivia Janowicz, play their respective first main draw matches. All three received a first-round bye as one of the top-8 seeds.

Doubles action begins the day’s action at 9 a.m., when Keegan and Woolcock, as well as Janowicz and Stojic partner in the doubles draw.

Two rounds of singles matches will follow doubles play on Friday.

Admission is free and parking restrictions are lifted in the Law School lot, located next to the Ring Tennis Complex.

Quotes from the Day:

“Stefani hasn’t played a match in a long time and I think that was pretty clear to us. Watching her practice, there was a big lag between her performance in practice and matches. I told her after the match that the best way and the only way to bridge that is by playing. The more matches she plays, hopefully, the more we can bridge the gap. Clearly, she has talent, she just needs to play more matches.” – UF head coach Roland Thornqvist on his thoughts about Stojic’s first collegiate match

“She’s really fast. The kid’s got world-class athleticism. If that’s where we begin in her development, than that’s a big step forward. She’s got great technique, we just have to make sure we hammer at being more consistent in our play and our decision making and not go for too much early in the point. Then, just play. The pace of play for her in her mind will slow down the more she plays. I think she will be more comfortable playing her second match than this first one today if she has the right mindset.” – UF head coach Roland Thornqvist on what Stojic can take away from today’s match

“It felt good to be out there again. I haven’t played a tournament since April. Even though it didn’t go my way today and it wasn’t the best match, it was good to be out there.” – Stefani Stojic on playing her first collegiate match

“It was different conditions, different weather, certainly. I haven’t played in a while. I have a shoulder injury and haven’t served in a while and I think my serve was what let me down today. Overall, I was striking the ball. She played well.” – Stefani Stojic on what she felt was working and not working for her during the match

“Being more consistent and not giving away as many points as I did will be something where need to be better in my next match and trying to improve my serve as much as I can.” – Stefani Stojic on what she will take away from the match

“Yesterday (Wednesday) in training we played for the first time and it went really well. Hopefully, this tournament will go well for us.” – Stefani Stojic on playing doubles Friday with Olivia Janowicz
