Monday October 7, 2013Alex Holston Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Freshman right-side hitter Alex Holston was named the SEC Freshman of the Week for her performances in Florida's sweeps of Texas A&M and Alabama. This is Florida’s second weekly honor of 2013, as junior libero Taylor Unroe was honored as the SEC Defensive Player of the Week two weeks ago.
Holston registered one error the entire weekend, hitting .567 combined in Florida’s sweeps of Texas A&M and Alabama. The Gator rookie tallied 10 kills in Florida’s 3-0 win over Texas A&M, hitting .474. Against the Crimson Tide, she was virtually unstoppable, recording a .727 hitting percentage at Alabama Sunday, notching eight kills in the three-set victory.
Holston helped Florida hit .529 as a team against the Crimson Tide, the third-highest hitting percentage in a single match in program history. Holston exceeded her season averages in kills/set (3.00 - 2.45), hitting percentage (.567 - .423) and points/set (3.08 - 2.79) over the weekend.
Florida hosts its first full SEC home weekend as the Gators welcome No. 15 Kentucky and longtime SEC foe Georgia to the O’Connell Center. The Gators and the Wildcats face off at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sun Sports/Fox Sports South on Friday, October 11. The matchup between the Gators and the Bulldogs airs live at 2 p.m. ET on CSS/CST.
