Brianna Morgan won a pair of singles matches on the first day of play.

Florida’s Alexandra Cercone (Seminole, Fla.), Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.) Brianna Morgan (Beverly Hills, Calif.) and Belinda Woolcock (Melbourne, Australia) combined for a 7-1 singles record on the first day of play in the qualifying singles draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships held at the Riviera Tennis Center on Tuesday.


The latter three each won two singles matches, while Cercone dropped her second round match against Texas A&M’s Cristina Stancu, 3-6, 7-6 (11), 6-3, late Tuesday evening.


Competitors need to win three singles matches to secure one of eight spots available for the main draw of the national event considered the first leg of the collegiate grand slam.


Woolcock began her long day on the doubles court where she paired with Gator teammate Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) and the fourth-seeded tandem defeated Mississippi State’s No. 48 Alexandra Perper and Naomi Tran, 8-6, in the first round on Tuesday morning. Oyen and Woolcock will play North Carolina’s Jamie Loeb and Hayley Carter in the second round on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET.

The Skinny on the Riviera:

The Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., will again serve as the host site for the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. The national championship, considered the first leg of the collegiate grand slam, began on Saturday, Sept. 28 with pre-qualifying singles and doubles matches, which was hosted by UCLA. Qualifying competition will be held Oct. 1-2 and main draw action is slated for Thursday, Oct. 3-Sunday, Oct. 6 at the Riviera Tennis Club.



Tournament Talk:

The qualifying rounds are comprised of a singles draw of 64 and a doubles draw of 32. Just as with pre-qualifying, a singles player or doubles tandem must win three consecutive matches to stay alive and move into the main draw. Eight spots in the singles main draw are reserved for qualifiers, while the doubles main draw will feature four teams from qualifying.



Gators at the Riviera/ITA All-American:

·         Sofie Oyen received an automatic berth into the singles main draw

·         Alexandra Cercone, Olivia Janowicz and Brianna Morgan earned a spot in the singles qualifying draw

·         Belinda Woolcock won three rounds in the pre-qualifying draw and earned a spot in the qualifying event

·         Oyen & Woolcock will play qualifying doubles draw matches



On the Line:

Singles semifinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 7-10 in Flushing, NY.
