Freshman Belinda Woolcock advanced to the quallifying draw of the national tournament.

University of Florida freshman Belinda Woolcock (Melbourne, Australia) knocked off Baylor’s No. 97-ranked and No. 16-seeded Jordaan Sanford, 6-2, 6-2 in the third and final round of pre-qualifying action of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Sunday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Woolcock, who was the only Gator involved in pre-qualifying action, won a pair of tough three-setters in the opening two rounds on Saturday before her straight-setter against Sanford to advance to the qualifying draw of the national tournament.

Woolcock will be joined in the 64-player qualifying draw by Gator teammates Alexandra Cercone (Seminole, Fla.), Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.) and Brianna Morgan (Beverly Hills, Calif.). The draw will be announced Monday.

Woolcock improved to 6-1 in collegiate singles action, including 2-0 against nationally-ranked opponents.

UCLA played host to the pre-qualifying portion of the national event, which was a single-elimination contest where competitors needed to win three rounds to advance to the qualifying draw which gets underway on Tue., Oct. 1 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

“This was the best I’ve seen Belinda play, no questions. She used her forehand really well, played her way forward. She looked confident in all three of her matches here. It’s almost too bad she gets a day off before the qualifying draw starts because she’s playing so well. I’m excited to see how she can do in the qualifying draw.”

“Her second match yesterday against Patticia Fargas (from DePaul, a 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (7) win) was ridiculous tennis. It was so good. Today, she faced a player who was more defensive and we had more control basically the whole time. Belinda did a good job making decisions.”
