Monday September 23, 2013Fowler Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week
University of Florida sophomore linebacker Dante Fowler, Jr. earned the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor for his performance in the 31-17 win over Tennessee, the league office announced Monday.
Fowler led Florida with three tackles for a loss, including the only sack of the game. He also forced two fumbles and recovered one of them, the other eventually led to a field goal for the Gators. Fowler helped lead the Florida defense as they held Tennessee to just 66 rushing yards, a season low for the Volunteers. He also helped the Gator defense hold Tennessee to two consecutive three-and-outs in the first half. Fowler was also key in the Gator defense holding Tennessee to negative yardage on four of its first five drives in addition to seven of 13 Volunteer drives resulting in two yards or less.
Next up, the Gators travel to Lexington, Ky., to take on the Kentucky Wildcats (1-2, 0-0 SEC) at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
