Tuesday September 10, 2013Gators Final Round Comeback Claims Second-Consecutive Cougar Classic Title

Charleston, S.C.

Improving by an extraordinary six strokes in the final round, the Florida’s women’s golf team claimed their second-consecutive title of the Cougar Classic and their first victory of the 2013-14 season. As a team, Florida ended the event at five-under (859), just one stroke ahead of the runner-up, Clemson (860).

Junior Anna Young shined on the final day, soaring from T16 to the top of the individual rankings, claiming her first title of her collegiate career and finishing the tournament at five-under (211).

Gator newcomers Karolina Vlckova and Maria Torres proved themselves at their first collegiate tournament, shooting two-under (214) and one-over (217), respectively. Vlckova also had a top-10 individual finish. Katie Mitchell finished her first competition as a Gator four-over (220), followed by Camilla Hedberg shooting 10-over (226).

Take Two: Last fall, the Gators took first place of 24 teams at the Cougar Classic finishing 12-under (852) for the tournament. Hedberg claimed the individual title, shooting a remarkable 13-under (203) to claim her first overall win. Returning to Yeamans Hall Club this year, Young and the Florida Gators made another early-season statement.

Head Coach Emily Glaser Says: “I am so happy for the team.  They played hard today and it was quite a comeback.  We knew we were knocking on the door of great play all week and we finally got some putts to fall today.

Anna had a great tournament and it’s a huge step for her to break through the barrier of not only finishing under par for three rounds, but getting her first collegiate win.

Our freshman came up big this week as well. It was a great team effort.”
