Monday September 9, 2013Full Team Effort Allows Florida Women's Golf to Improve in Round Two

Charleston, S.C.

Consistency from all five Gators competing at the Cougar Classic contributed to Florida women’s golf gaining three spots in the team rankings after round two, moving from No. 8 to No. 5 out of 20 programs at the tournament.

For the second day in a row, freshman Maria Torres led the Gators women’s golf team, along with junior Anna Young. Torres fell back just one stroke from round one, finishing one-under (71) on the day and making three birdies in her round-two performance. Jumping significantly in the individual rankings, Torres ended the day tied for third.

Young improved by two strokes, shooting one-under (71) as well, surpassing her 2012-13 season best and matching her collegiate best round. The Canada native capped off her second day on a high note, making an eagle on the 18th hole.

Redshirt sophomore Katie Mitchell raised the bar by cutting four strokes off of her round-one score, finishing the day even (72). Followed by Mitchell, freshman Karolina Vlckova stayed consistent, shooting just one-over (73) for the second-straight day and junior Camilla Hedberg fell back two strokes, finishing five-over (77).

The Gators showed notable progress on the day and are ready to compete in the third and final round of the 11th annual Cougar Classic.

Head Coach Emily Bastel Says: “Today, we played better and I was happy to see Katie and Anna improve.  We still feel like there are some birdie opportunities that we didn't take advantage of and that's what we will try and improve on tomorrow.”
