Saturday September 7, 2013Florida Women's Golf to Begin the Fall Season at the Cougar Classic

Gainesville, Fla.

The No. 10 Florida women’s golf team will tee off their 2013-14 season tomorrow at the Cougar Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston. The Gators have the opportunity to bring home consecutive titles at the event, placing first out of 24 teams last fall, with junior and top returner Camilla Hedberg taking the individual title.

 

Course Information:

The tournament is being held at the par-72, 6,204-yard Yeamans Hall Club, Sept. 8-10.

 

Tee Times:

Sunday First Group – 8:00 a.m.

Monday First Group – 8:00 a.m.

Tuesday Shotgun Start – 9:00 a.m.

 

The Lineup:

·         Freshman Karolina Vlckova (Unhošť, Czech Republic): After an impressive amateur career, Vlckova will make her collegiate debut for the Orange and Blue at the Cougar Classic.

·         Redshirt sophomore Katie Mitchell (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.): Earning the Conference USA Freshman of the Year award while attending UCF, Mitchell aims to contribute on the course in her first career competition with Florida.

·         Freshman Maria Torres (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico): Following a notable summer, carding the lowest score among the players from Puerto Rico in the 2013 Amateur Team Championships, Torres will tee off for the first time as a Gator.

·         Junior Anna Young (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada): Young returns to the Cougar Classic with the opportunity to improve from her 2012 performance, shooting 77-75-82 (+18).

·         Junior Camilla Hedberg (Sitges, Spain): As the 2012 Cougar Classic individual champion, finishing a stellar 13-under, Hedberg brings valuable experience back to Yeamans Hall Club.

 

Head Coach Emily Bastel Says: “Our team is excited to head to Charleston. We take three new players this week, who will be gaining valuable experience against a great field.  This event is a great opportunity to test the things we have been working and see how competitive we can be early in the season.”

 

SEC Showdown: Among the 20 teams to take the course for the tournament, Florida will face six other SEC schools: Auburn, No. 22 LSU, Mississippi State, Missouri, Ole Miss and South Carolina.
