Gainesville, Fla.

Pamela Begić (No. 22) celebrates her second consecutive match with a goal. Florida defeated Oklahoma 3-0 Friday.

Goals from a trio of players gave No. 10 Florida a 3-0 win over Oklahoma Friday evening at the James G. Pressly Stadium. Weather delayed the start of Friday’s match one hour. The match will now air tape-delayed Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 3 p.m. ET on FOX Sports Florida.

When play did begin, the Gators scored quickly. Sophomore Pamela Begić headed in Florida’s first goal at 8:55, marking her second consecutive match with a goal. The next two goals were the first of their Gator careers for sophomore Lauren Smith and freshman Brooke Sharp. Smith picked up the ball just above the box after a Sooner deflection off Lindsey Cooper’s cross. She took three touches and then hit a left-footed diagonal ball to the far post at 59:05. Florida’s third goal started when freshman Savannah Jordan danced along the end line to bring the ball toward the Sooners’ goal. Three OU players tried to clear the ball, but the final touch put the ball just above the six-yard box. Sharp took a step and then used her left foot to place the ball in the far post netting.

GATOR PERFORMANCE NOTES:

·         Begić headed in Florida’s first goal tonight. She recorded her first collegiate goal Sunday at Florida International – also off a header.

·         Lauren Smith and Sharp each scored their first collegiate goals in the second half of play. It was the second consecutive match multiple Gators turned in their first collegiate goals as Begić and Meggie Dougherty Howard scored at FIU.

·         Junior goalkeeper Taylor Burke posted her second-consecutive shutout of the season and the 17th of her career.

RECORDS: Florida (4-1, 0-0 SEC); Oklahoma (2-3, 0-0 Big 12).

THE SERIES: This was the first meeting between Florida and Oklahoma.

QUOTES
On tonight’s match:

“I don’t really think we played our best tonight, but to come out of here with three goals and a shutout was definitely a step in the right direction for us.

“I was satisfied with the effort. I just think we struggled execution wise.  We rely a lot on rhythm and we never really established and kept a rhythm. As I said, in terms of coming out with the result, you can’t be upset about that.” – UF coach Becky Burleigh

How have the newer players been doing?

“Well tonight was a really young crew because (Annie) Bobbitt is out with a concussion, so that left a sophomore and two freshmen in that rotation. I think they are just going to get better and better.” – UF coach Becky Burleigh

How strong is Pamela Begić at executing headers and such on set pieces?

“Well we’ve been spending a lot of time on set pieces this week on both defensively and offensively and Pam is finally realizing that she can be a little more of a threat offensively. That’s good to see because it’s hard to defend height.” – UF coach Becky Burleigh

Hear from the Gator goal scorers:

How was it getting your second goal as a Gator?

“It was great, like every other goal, and it’s great to be able to contribute to the team.” – freshman Pamela Begić

Now that you have a second goal in, did you come out, after your first goal tonight, feeling a lot more confident on the field?

“Yeah, definitely, and I think that we’ve been working really hard in our practices to improve our set pieces. So, that really showed tonight.” – freshman Pamela Begić

Talk about how that first goal feels:

“It was an awesome feeling. Pretty indescribable. Just, all around, a very great feeling.” – sophomore Lauren Smith

How does it feel to come in and start in the last four matches? How does it feel to get out there and be a major part of a team like this?

“It feels really good. I think the team is doing awesome this year, and it just feels really good to be participating and being a part of the success.” – sophomore Lauren Smith

Talk about how that first goal feels:

“It felt amazing. I’ve been waiting for this the whole time I’ve been here. I’m so excited and it just felt really good, and my teammates were there supporting me.” – freshman Brooke Sharp

Is that the most satisfying strike you’ve ever had in your soccer career so far? Where does it rank?

“It’s pretty high up there because it was my first one at a collegiate level. So it was really exciting.” – freshman Brooke Sharp

And hear from Gator goalkeeper Taylor Burke

Two shutouts in a row. How good that feels?

“It feels good. I mean I have to give a lot of credit to my defense who have been playing unbelievable. It’s just a team effort back there.” – junior goalkeeper Taylor Burke

Talk about the defense in general:

“We’ve been doing really well. We’ve had a lot of different people back there, which is good to have multiple people back there and everybody is getting experience and it’s been going really well.” - – junior goalkeeper Taylor Burke

WORTH NOTING
The assist on the Gators’ first goal came from the foot of junior Lauren Silver – she provided the assist on three consecutive goals, dating back to Sunday’s 4-0 win at FIU…Begić’s goal at 8:55 was the earliest Gator score of 2013…two Gators – freshman Meggie Dougherty Howard and redshirt sophomore Lindsey Cooper – each made their first collegiate starts Friday…Florida last played in a weather-delayed match in the opening round of the 2010 Southeastern Conference Tournament in Orange Beach, Ala…heavy rains pushed the opening round of that tournament to a day later.
