Three scored their first goals of the season – with two posting the first of their Gator careers Sunday. Senior Caroline Triglia provided the only score of the opening half, putting in her right-footed shot in the 36th minute. Savannah Jordan put in a spinning shot in the 52nd minute to up the freshman’s total to six goals through four matches. Then two headers off corner kicks in a five-minute span pushed the lead to 4-0. First Pamela Begič put in a score at 53:24 and then Meggie Dougherty Howard headed in a ball from almost the same spot at 58:21.

QUOTES
On tonight’s match:

“I think for us it was just a matter of playing one or two touch. And when we did that, we knew we were going to be effective. Late in the game when it got a little chippy, I liked the presence our team brought. They weren’t going to back down from anything. The game dictated that we step up and be a little physical and we did just that.

“It was a great team effort. Some people got to see their first action and some people who don’t play as much got to see quite a bit of action and I think that is always good for their confidence.”

” – UF coach Becky Burleigh

Hear from the Gator goal scorers:

“My first goal of the season, which is always nice. I was actually out wide and Maggie (Rodgers) and I made contact. She tried to go over the backline but it was a little short so I went in and deflected it off a defender. I was thinking ‘should I spin out and drop it or just kick it with my right foot.’ But I decided ‘just kick it’. So I kicked it and it went exactly where I wanted it to go.

“I think tonight was big for us as we were coming off the FSU loss. We wanted to score goals and we did that tonight. Plus there were a lot of physical battles that went on tonight that brought us even closer as a team. So I think tonight was a good night for us.” – senior midfielder Caroline Triglia

“I remember getting the ball from Pam (Begič) and then I turned to my left side so the ball was on my right foot. I hit it low and hard and hoped it was going to go in. I tried to put a little side spin on it because we knew that was a better ball against this team. I tried to bend it in a little bit to the far bottom post.” – freshman forward Savannah Jordan

“I just went for it. I just jumped. I decided it was going to be my ball and in the end, it was.

“We were talking about improving our execution and we really put our minds toward that goal. I think we succeeded as a team.” – freshman midfielder Pamela Begič

“We’ve been working on set pieces a lot in the past two weeks. So I knew where I needed to be and when a good ball got served in, I just tried to put it away.” – freshman midfielder Meggie Dougherty Howard

And from Taylor Burke, who stopped a FIU penalty kick

“I remember staring at the girl (taking the PK) and Havana (Solaun) telling me ‘you’ve got this Taylor!’ After that, I had a lot of confidence. I got a good touch on the ball and pushed it wide so I was happy about that. It was good to come out with win today.” – junior goalkeeper Taylor Burke

WORTH NOTING
With her back-to-back services on corner kick goals by Begič  and Dougherty Howard, junior Lauren Silver turned in the first multi-assist match of her Gator career…two Gators – freshmen Brooke Sharp and Liz Slattery – each made their first collegiate starts Sunday…junior Tessa Andujar made her first start of season – when she was a freshman, she scored her first collegiate goal at FIU…there was plenty of stoppage in Sunday’s match as the two teams combined for 31 fouls – including seven yellow cards…the four goals was the highest offensive output for the Gators this season as the team opened with a pair of 3-1 wins…tonight was the first shutout of the season for the Gators.
