Gainesville, Fla.

The Gators celebrate with freshman Savannah Jordan after she scores her first of two goals in Florida 3-1 win over FGCU.

Freshman Savannah Jordan gave the Gators’ the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute and then added an insurance score just under five and a half minutes later as No. 9 Florida opened the season with a 3-1 win over Florida Gulf Coast Friday evening at the James G. Pressly Stadium.

Junior Havana Solaun scored the season’s first goal in the 35th minute off the double assist from freshmen Brooke Sharp and Pamela Begič. The Eagles tied the match just before halftime when Ally Kasun headed in Melissa Arnold’s corner kick. It was the 13th season-opening win in Florida’s 19-year history.

GATORS STARS

·         Solaun, a graduate of Gainesville’s Buchholz High School, scored the first goal of the season off a 12-yard left-footed shot. It is the second goal in a season’s debut for Solaun as she also scored UF’s second goal in a 2-0 win at Miami in 2011.

·         Jordan, from Fayetteville, Ga., is the first Gator freshman to score twice in a season opener since Aimee Wagstaff in the program’s debut match in 1995.

·         The Gators limited the Eagles to a single shot.

RECORDS: Florida (1-0, 0-0 SEC); Florida Gulf Coast (0-1, 0-0 ASC).

THE SERIES: Florida is now 4-0 versus FGCU. All of the meetings have come since the 2011 season. The Eagles scored their first goal versus the Gators tonight.

QUOTES
On the play of Havana Solaun:
“I kept hearing their coach say, ‘who’s got 19, who’s got 19?’ so you know you’re doing a good job when the other coach is worried about you.” - UF coach Becky Burleigh

On the debut of Savannah Jordan:
“I think it was really big, because she was really frustrated in the first half because she probably should have had a hat trick in the first 10 minutes. When we took her off at the half she said, ‘I’m going to finish some in the second half,’ and I just told her she was getting into great position to score and that it’s going to come and to be patient… and it did.” - UF coach Becky Burleigh

Emotions after scoring first collegiate goal:
“I was pretty nervous, but once I start getting on the field and playing it just gets out. I think after the first goal it really relaxed me a lot. I had a little celebration - and I’m not much of a celebrator - but I think I was excited and relieved a little bit.” - UF freshman forward Savannah Jordan

And adding another?
“It was exciting. Especially the first one to put us in the lead was great, and then the second one was just icing on the cake.” - UF freshman forward Savannah Jordan

On how the Gators kept their pushing despite many near-misses
“I think we came out strong and we scored the goal, and then they scored close on our heels. Then in the second half we came out strong, got on rhythm, and stayed to our game and scored with plenty opportunities.

“I think that we have a lot of faith in our system, and our coaches and teammates. When you know it’s going to come, you don’t necessarily get frustrated. We believe that it’s going to work and I think that it showed there that we finish opportunities.” – junior midfielder Havana Solaun

WORTH NOTING
Florida is now 13-4-2 all-time in season openers … tonight’s goal production was the most for UF in a season opener since a 3-1 win over Drake in 2005 … for the first time in program’s history, there are four on the Gators’ roster who scored in their freshman debut – Jordan (2013), Claire Falknor (2012), Solaun (2011) and Taylor Travis (2010) … the Gators’ starting lineup included two freshmen – Jordan and goalkeeper Nora Neset Gjøen … another Gator made her first collegiate start tonight, sophomore midfielder Lauren Smith.

UP NEXT:
The Gators welcome Oregon State (0-1, 0-0 Pac-12) to Pressly Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. The Beavers lost 1-0 at Florida State Friday evening. This is the first time the two teams meet in regular-season action. Match can be heard live on ESPN 850.
