Friday August 16, 2013No. 21 UCF defeats No. 9 Florida Soccer in Exhibition Match

ORLANDO, Fla.

The preseason No. 9 University of Florida soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision in an exhibition match to preseason No. 21 UCF Friday evening in front of 571 fans at the UCF Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

The Knights turned in the first goal in the 27th minute. With Gator goalkeeper Nora Neset Gjøen on the ground, Lena Permann put in a shot from short distance off the assist from Jennifer Martin. It was the only goal of the opening half.

Florida came out controlling possession in the early going of the second half, but a long goal from Tatiana Coleman pushed the Knight lead to 2-0 in the 55th minute. UCF did have another good look at the goal in the 74th minute when a Knight was alone just above the box. Junior Karina Gutsche sped back to end the play before a shot was taken.

An excellent look for the Gators came in the 82nd minute when Lindsey Cooper used her speed to run onto the ball, move toward the center and then sent a ball which found freshman Savannah Jordan in front of the goal. Jordan’s shot was just touched wide by the UCF goalkeeper Lianne Maldonado for a corner kick.

For the match, UCF turned in nine shots while the Gators posted seven.

“This is why we play these exhibition games so that we can take a look at the things we are a little deficit in and fix those. Tomorrow we are going to spend some time watching video and discussing some things that need to get better,” UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. “Some examples include our physical presence defensively has to get better. We also need to have more trust in each other offensively to execute.”

The Gators open the 2013 season with a home match versus Florida Gulf Coast on Friday, Aug. 23. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at the James G. Pressly Stadium and admission is free. The first 500 fans receive a banner clapper.

You can meet the Gators Saturday at Verizon Fan Day in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. The team will sign autographs for one hour beginning at 5 p.m.
